This piece is breath taking, my friend Every tree different, every unique... And the composition is eye catching. This masterpiece is simply screaming to me saying - go on, draw something!

Great concept, beautifully done.      Something deeply pagan about this one - tree roots, the underworld, all of that..  somehow combined with science fiction..  (maybe I am thinking of Larry Niven's "Smoke Ring" books, which describe a zero-G environment where trees float about like tiny planets.)

.... I feel like I am saying this more and more but I think I might revisit this concept .... I didn't quite know where this was heading when I started so things like a nearly empty center feel like they could use more Thought. I don't want to get too gimmicky, however, right now the center is kind of a let down.
Also I think I would like to have more detail and uniqueness in the individual trees....
I might have to finally break down and work on something larger than what will fit on my scanner. That means photos..... ugh...

I think I might try combining this structure with Magic and mud chobek.deviantart.com/art/Magi…
.... not sure yet....
Right now I am working on this self motivated project to draw 100 trees....... I am 4 drawings in with mixed results.... I don't want to overthink anything at this point, but I feel like I am swinging between really sloppy grey messes... and images that look like they could be a logo for a credit union..... by the end of the project I hope to have learned something about why I like to draw trees.
....but I might just get really sick of them.

100 trees is very ambitious, I applaud the ambition, but it worries me that you'll either make yourself hate drawing trees, or you'll quit and your confidence will crash...   Anyway, that's none of my business, my job is to cheer you on from the side-lines (and I draw a mean set of side-lines ).  Having a love-hate relationship with your own finished works is totally normal, just press on with the next one and don't over-think it - that's the wrong bit of the brain; focus on the sensuous quality of drawing that gives you pleasure, because I'm here to tell you it gives your watchers pleasure as well

Well I just lost the response I typed .... so I will try and rephrase ......
I think I started this project because I was developing some bad habits when drawing trees. Things that made the drawings too dismissible and cheap, to my eye.... I think I might be a bit paranoid .... but I hope that by the end of this I can see what conventions are shorthand and should be thrown away, and what are  are elements of essence that I have been able to tap into.

I went through this with my patterns too....
I was really dismissive of those .... it may or may not have been connected to a coworkers compliment.... that I could even design wallpaper......
What I heard was not anything they had intended .... I heard superficial... they meant I was skilled. However, I had been squeamish about my pattern work seeming empty so the comment just stabbed at my heart.
that's around the time I started the 75 tile project. chobek.deviantart.com/gallery/… ..... I was trying to burn myself out.
but I think I came out of the project stronger.... (Now I really could design wallpaper)

With this I want to run everything to its' end and see what sticks. Right now I don't have any demands upon myself .... but soon I want to do some quicker and looser drawings from life .... maybe do a little specific tree research( right now I draw a tree but it is kind of a made up breed)

I would say the only out and out failure so far has been "Taste" .... the concept is ok but the tree is a mess.... It was originally made up of different bones that shaped the tree but it read too much like a find the hidden object puzzle so I killed the shapes with pattern.... now I just have a lumpy weird grey tree on my hands, but I promised myself that I would post everything good or bad so....

....  we shall see..... hopefully I am not outsmarting myself

thank you for sharing that,  it's not often someone is so honest and self-critical about their work, and brave too.  Most of us I think just try to find something that works and then stick to it, you're too adventurous for that.  I look forward to more noble failures and brilliant successes;  I am sure that some drawing from life will bring good things.  I'll have a proper look at the tiles series soon;  seems like an almost scientific investigation.  I like the way you analyse your work, it's only a bad thing if it incapacitates you and destroys your creativity, which is what happens when I try to analyse mine.  It's creativity that is the most precious resource, I would say.  But I don't think it's a danger for you;  even when you try to burn yourself out, you just come out stronger

I've had that sort of "wallpaper" comment too, well-meaning but hideously destructive.  Takes me years to get over things like that!

Good luck dear Chobek, and feel free to sound off any time if it helps! ~monty

i decided I am drawing 100 tree drawings.... this is #2.... I think the rules are- black and white (and grey) and a tree or tree part somewhere in the image....
2.... hmmm.... this might take some time
also I need to buy myself a compas .... for this I used a cottage cheese lid, the bottom of my dogs medicine bottle... and the cap to the seasoned salt....
My dependence on garbage is getting sad.

That should be a good series.
Funny, I was planning a Christmas card last time around (never got to it).
I collected a table full of lids, jars, cups, random cardboard circles from who knows what AND a compass.
All I needed was one circle to trace :]

Chobek In reply to nilwilnil [2017-02-27 03:20:47 +0000 UTC]

LOL I usually plan poorly ....I will have a sudden urge to add a circle then start digging through everything on my table and pile next to it for ... anything round.
after I get a compass....
I am guessing that I will have a bunch of circles on everything for a couple of weeks .... and then I won't.... because I will lose it ... I lose everything.
.... a few years ago I lost my purse and my wallet in the house .....I never found it I just waited for all my cards to expire .....
eventually if you are patient things work themselves out .

I can't be trusted with things ......

2... if it ain't broke, it don't need fixing!!  A set of compasses can be unreliable, in my experience! They can skitter all over the place most erratically causing wonderfully wayward lines but not the gorgeous, sweeping, accurate curves required. Still, I might be unpractised (or simply inept!)

Chobek In reply to watergypsy50 [2017-02-27 03:11:01 +0000 UTC]

I don't mind a few weird circles or wavering lines Even when I use equipment to keep me clean and professional I end up wonky.... it's ok ... I like wonky.
.... I doubt that I will ever become a skilled craftsman with drafting tools but I think Joe (husband) is getting sick of me asking... as we watch tv... do you have anything round over there? And if you look at my circles closely you will see the outline of my finger sticking over the rim of whatever I am tracing ..... visually I don't really care but it always makes me  feel stupid ....
so I look forward the feeling smart ? I guess technology is awesome
