LOL there's a lot to cover, but basically, for human kids play a game that may or may not have something to do with ending the universe, while twelve trolls from another universe play their version of the same game. Eventually the groups meet, and there's a lot of confusion over cultural differences, and both groups try to save the universe even while some of the members work against them.
It's got a huge archive but if you want to check it out, start with Act 5, where the character Karkat Vantas is introduced. It's worth the investment of time but you should give it a chance.

Because it's technically a game they're playing and because there are multiple universes, their 'true selves' are not necessarily dead, though some of their 'dream selves' are. At this point, there are a bunch of theories as to what's going on.
