just don't give up on the drawing, that's the magic of painting! lineart always felt so official and final to me, like you couldn't fix things later on, but painting helps a loooot! Ya wanna move that finger to the left?-no problem! just blend it and it's fixed! lol
BUt some tips are to use in-between colors, it gives off a great vibe. For reference I find that the lighting in Thoraya Maronesy 's videos often has that color at the edge of light and shadow? If that makes any sense?
And I feel like everyone tells me my art looks soft and I have no idea what it's reffering to? XD maybe because all elements feel like they coexist unlike, say, you were to copy and paste a real life picture over a cartoon OVER pixelart? moooore unified? For that I like to choose a slightly dark color and make a new multiply layer on top that's all that color, then change the opacity until it looks fine to me. ^^
but the most important thing imo is blending! :-D it might not be for everyone, just like working with a lot of layers isn't for *me*, but once you get used to it blending becomes very relaxing. Just yeah, don't give up and take your time!~
P.S. if you're willing to blend a lot, don't put too much effort into the sketch. It's gonna get covered up with layers and layers (like actual layers this time, not the ones in your program XD) of color and it helps if the sketch has thicker lines, since you can basically smudge them over the base colors to create shadow ;D
