Strengths:

Sayuri isn’t exactly blessed with natural talent when it comes to physical activity but she makes up for it with quick thinking and effort. All the hours she has spent in the gymnasium show in her playing. She has a great control especially over her spikes and is a steady all-round player. Also, you simply can’t ignore the fact that she is very tall which gives her an advantage in the mid-air battles.
Because of her great game sense - thanks to all the days and nights she has spent staring at professional games, it’s not rare to find her helping the coach with strategies and making suggestions on how to improve their play style.

Sayuri was never a strong child, in fact she was quite light and fragile, but especially after her growth spurt (and she grew a lot) she has been lacking in physical strength. She has long limbs but not much muscle. Those long limbs are also surprisingly hard to control, so she doesn’t move very fast. Sayuri’s lack of strength is the biggest reason why she doesn’t see herself as a very important spiker of the team, which leads to her not taking that much responsibility on the court. She doesn’t make much noise and doesn’t call for the ball unless she knows it’s necessary for scoring a point. When you combine her being pretty quiet with her height and pointed eyes she can be quite intimidating in the eyes of first year students, so communicating with them is pretty hard for her.

Even though one would probably think that the sulking might lead to her getting mad at people Sayuri isn’t the type to get angry over something insignificant (even though the team’s 1st years tend to mistake her strictness for anger).
After someone has enough interest or courage to peek past the walls and forget the first impressions anyone can tell that Sayuri is kind. Not necessarily gentle, but kind. She is very (almost painfully) honest about her opinions and doesn’t sugarcoat her words but she truly does care for her friends and people around her, even though they can’t always see it. Ironically she is also very good at telling what mood people are in just by their face or body language even though most people (even her closest friends) can’t figure out her mood at all unless she puts it in words.

Often in middle of a normal conversation she adds a stupid comment or pun maybe in a sarcastic tone and with a completely stony face and it gets her friends and teammates (if they don’t go into a shock or don’t get that she actually meant it as a joke) every time. When she manages to make everyone laugh you might be able to see a beautiful smile on her face.
She is surprisingly relaxed most of the time and likes to just goof around when she can, but when it comes to volleyball or school she gets serious. Sayuri is very hardworking, partly because she knows that she doesn’t have the luxury to take it easy because she would be overtaken very quickly, partly because she is hard on herself and doesn’t have too much self confidence. Being methodical helps her to concentrate on what she is doing and what she is working towards to and she doesn’t like breaking her habits.

Sayuri lives in a fairly normal household. She is the only child of family with an income little bit above average. Their family is pretty traditional, since her mom is a stay-at-home housewife and her dad is the only one with a full-time job as a normal electricity company’s employee.
Her mom doesn’t have any serious illnesses, but she has a weak immunity system against illnesses so she gets sick pretty often. When Sayuri was little she also used to get sick very easily so they ended up deciding that she wouldn’t go to kindergarten and that her mom could look after her. She didn’t have many chances to play with other kids and she grew used to playing on her own and didn’t really know how to act when she actually did get to interact with other children. Despite being quiet and a bit awkward she did become friends with a girl who lived next door, Hishima Wakana.
Sayuri and Wakana went to the same elementary school. Unlike Wakana, who laughed and smiled a lot, she didn’t make many friends but she didn’t have any complains about school and she liked learning.
In middle school she got separated from her best friend of many years because they had to move due to family reasons but they still kept in touch, first with letters and then e-mails. Nevertheless her parents were worried about her not having enough social interaction and they encouraged her to join a club. They supposed that she would join a culture club, but she ended up trying soccer since Wakana had also started it at her middle school. She thought that it was pretty fun but she had just started growing very fast so her coordination was very bad and she couldn’t run very fast, so she ended up quitting it, saying that she wasn’t good at it. Though, in 8th grade she was scouted by her school's volleyball club. They basically begged her to join, in the end making Sayuri give in and join the club. To everyone’s surprise she continued the sport all the way until her obsession with getting grades made her quit when she had to start studying for the high school entrance exams.
She applied and got into the high school closest to her house, Kougawa Koukou, and was scouted by the volleyball club once again and decided to continue the sport just for fun, but was so moved by the energy and motivation her team had and she quickly fell in love with the sport too.

- Nishikado Tetsu. Sayuri met him when she was invited to the Bears' practice! Tetsu took a liking to her because she gave him a snack bar.. Even though she doesn't really understand his reasoning, she thinks he's a nice guy.
