Nah its rooted in my playing of Mass Effect (Very well developed universe btw) I thought "How come we didn't just combine the new tech we got from these aliens with our current gunpowder weapons? Stopping power would be huuuge" (Imagine getting hit with a 50 cal travelling at over 600 Ms a second O_O
