Description This is based on a classic period Mayan vessel.
Possibly a scene from the Popol Vuh.  The hero twins tricking the lords of the underworld and killing them.
In the Popol Vuh (a post-colonial text), it tells of the journey of the hero twins as they go through a series of trials in the underworld.
In one part of the story, they disguise themselves as traveling magicians.  They then kill a dog and magically restore it to life.
They continue to do this resurrection trick and finally, the death gods themselves want it to be done to them.
The hero twins agree and kill the death gods... but don't resurrect them.

The other half of the scene shows God L on this throne (thought to be the lord main god of the underworld).  He is surrounded by the women of the court and talking to one of the girls.
Notice the kinda speech line going to the words he is saying.
One of the women is pouring chocolate into a large drinking vessel.  It was done this way to froth the chocolate.

*Notice the cool rabbit writing in a codex.

*An easy to remember glyph*
Check out the 4th glyph going to the right in the upper row of glyphs that looks like a fish.  It says kakao - chocolate
So we know this vessel was used to drink chocolate.

This is truly beautiful! I wish books on Mesoamerica would include these types of illustrations. They're inspiring!
