The first in a series of photos I'm putting up of my visit to Italy. Watch this space, as I'm going to attempt to upload one per day (depending on how much free time I have).The car is a 70s Fiat 500 R. There were literally hundreds of these things all over the streets in Sorrento, and in my mind it pretty much summarises the craziness (especially in terms of the driving) of the place.

Thanks! I tried to learn to drive on a Fiat 500. Never again. I can't help but love the way they look, though.

This was at the bottom of a bit of road that had been sort of carved out of the rock [link] .
And yeah, they are quite similar, except the 600's a bit more rounded

I'm glad we didn't decide to rent a car, because we would've spent much of our time there in mortal peril. Surprisingly, didn't witness any crashes though, which was a plus.

We were on a tour so we were on a bus.

It's the way to go. That way, you don't have to worry about your insurance constantly.

It was a package tour back in 1970. Things were a bit different back then. One thing that blew my mind was seeing a 1969 Plymouth Fury in a parking lot in Rome. Looked like a battleship in a lakefront marina.

I know right? It's the quirkiness that makes it so popular in Italy, I think. That and the fact that they can get down all those tiny backstreets and not break down for 50 years
