Tree climbing honestly does not seem very likely for dakotaraptor. I mean we're talking about an animal that weighs as much as a polar bear and stands as tall as a man. Most a boreal animals today are human sized or smaller.

Yet it has massive curved claws, extremely muscular limbs and very strong hands with curved, large claws.
Lions can climbs trees, and so can black bears.
I think adults didn't climb much per se, but they would be perfectly capable if necesarry.Β
Only very small dromeosaurs, like Microraptor , Sinornithosaurus, etc would be considered aboreal.

Hey there. I know I'm late. In my original post, I worded it wron. While I do believe that adult Dakotaraptor was capable of climbing trees, I don't think one could utilize the ability to the extent shown here. Even the devs of the game said that tree climbing is no longer effective as an adult.

Due to the lack of juvenile Dakotaraptor at the time when they made the video, the adult model was used.
The Saurian devs assured that only juvenile will be able to climb the tree.
Dakotaraptor has to restrict oneself on the ground after growing(Not sure about sub-adult..). This will surely affect how players ambush prey and evade danger.
It will be one aspect of the gameplay that is changed during ontogeny.

Are you being sarcastic? Just because dakotaraptor had claws on it's hands did not mean it was arboreal. That muscular build and balancing tail has nothing to do with tree climbing. By following that logic, I could say that a tiger can climb trees because they have a muscular build and a long, steady tail. I'm not saying that dakotaraptor was incapable of climbing trees, but I did not think that they would rely on them for hunting or subduing prey, at least not in the way shown here.

Not how he says SMALL theropods though. It is much easier to flutter 30 pounds up a tree rather than 1,000. Dakotaraptor was simply too large and heavy to climb up trees regularly.

ThatCoelurosaur In reply to FeatherNerd [2017-01-03 22:15:22 +0000 UTC]
The wing structure of a a pterosaur is nothing like that of a bird, so that argument is invalid, not to mention that the biggest pterosaurs had very scrawny, skinny bodies, so they would not have weighed much. And, once again, dakotaraptor weighed 1,000 POUNDS!! That kind of weight cannot be fluttered up into a tree. That kind of weight would snap most branches that Dakota would try not climb up onto. Being light enough to fly has nothing to do with being light enough to sit in a tree.

9Weegee In reply to FeatherNerd [2017-04-12 19:10:51 +0000 UTC]
it's not just the weight, but most large azhdarchidsΒ (Including quetzalcoatlus) could only soar, and still, azhdarchidsΒ didn't live by the ocean. quetzalcoatlus is not well adapted for flight.

ThatCoelurosaur In reply to FeatherNerd [2017-01-05 23:18:52 +0000 UTC]
This arguement is not about flight restrictions due to weight. It's about a 500+ pound animal climbing up a freaking tree. Following your logic, we should have dakotaraptor sized arboreal creatures, including birds. We should have ostrich-sized birds able to climb up trees. The average tree branch would SNAP if a dakotaraptor tried to climb up into one.

I have to ask: Why does Pachycephalosaurus have such a wide grin? Most (dinosaur) herbivores have larger cheeks for chewing the plants that they eat. Did this guy eat a certain kind of plant or chew differently than most other herbivores at the time? Just curious.

Dinosaurzzz In reply to Nonavian [2016-11-23 15:13:19 +0000 UTC]
They have explained that they did not include cheeks because there really is not any evidence for them, and there are a lot of herbivorous reptiles living today that don't have them, and they do completely fine.

Really loving your artwork. I've been trying to get in touch with Saurian, though; I was wondering if you could help me out. I supported their Kickstarter and everything, it's jsut that I have a dinosaur novel that's getting ready to go up on KS Sept 1st. I would really like it if someone could retweet or post on the Saurian FB or what have you about it.

Do you think that dromaosaurids may have had temporarily hunted in packs? Like: an anatosaurus gets away from it's group while many dakotaraptors are following the herd?
