Description Our favourite band of trigger happy explorers disembark from Zero X's main body in the MEV (MArtian excursion vehicle.

Zero X first appeared in "Thunderbirds are Go", the first in the Thunderbirds film series and to me probably the weakest of the 3 films, 1, for its near total lack of story and 2, it's not really a Thunderbirds film, it's a Zero X film, kind of like a back door pilot for a series that never happened.

Don't get me wrong I love the movie, Barry Gray is on top form and the special effects are awesome, the Rock snake sequence in particular being incredibly creepy but special effects can't carry a film alone. Thankfully despite its flaws the Anderson's next film, Thunderbirds 6 was a vast improvement.

Where Zero X really came into its own was in the comics, anyone who knows me knows I love Mike Nobels art. The stories where an interesting mix of pure scifi and more realistic storytelling and overall darker then its counterpart "Fireball XL5".

Zero X also appeared in the Captain Scarlet pilot doing what it does best, blowing stuff up in the name of peaceful exploration.

I've long thought about it and, in the end, I've decided that the thing that really endears Zero-X to me is the unapologetic Dan Dare feel of the design. A direct ascent/direct return Mars explorer with an air-breathing first stage, something that modern spacecraft designers are only now reluctantly admitting may be practical for LEO missions, let alone deep space exploration! She's quite the lady!

I remember when I was a kid in UK in the late 1960's, and I desperately wanted a model of ZERO-X. The object of my desire was over three feet in length with detatchable wing boosters, and other sections. Alas, it cost over thrity GBP at the time. Well beyond my parents means for a toy. Great image of the old girl. Thanks.

I have one too! They're really cool.Β Β

Sadly, I don't have access to tweezers, so it's a pain in the ass to get the landing gear out

Did you get the rock snake figure with yours?Β

I love this! I was totally obsessed with this baby when the film came out, and I used to build it out of Betta Bilda (like Lego, but it had smaller blocks and was more versatile in those days) all the time. I'm curious; is that the Mars model from Celestia, by any chance?

It might be a similar texture, one of the layers I used to create mars was from NASA .
I love the ship too, I was pretty chuffed when I finally got a decent model of it.

Nice one! I hope the proposed new Thunderbirds series comes up with stuff this good. Not sure who the production team is on that but they should definitely get you involved. Look how much concept art is done for movies now and something still as iconic as the Gerry Anderson series-es should be produced with respect.

Watched the movie again last week (thank you Netflix) and I have to say it's a fairly well thought out concept...even if they both crashed.

Its actually a similar concept to what the Virgin Galactic people use.

One of the greatest and yet criminally underrated space ship in fiction. You have done the Zero-X great justice in this peace. I like this pic because we never did get to see the MEV seperate from the main body when they arrived on mars. Great work keep it up.

Chatting to the Crew, the producer and the writer missed the point. A lot of the creative decisions where made before Jonathan Frakes was hired. Most of the decisions he made brought it back in line with the original.

He' a good director and a cool guy, theres no need to hate on a man for disliking one film.

Yes actually, I personally put it second in my opinion, looking at it fairly its the only one of the three that actually allocates a decent part of its run time to IR actually rescuing things.

At the end of the day all the TB films miss the mark, just in different ways.

Well... to be fair you have a point, but..... at least Thunderbirds Are Go! was with actual supermarionation that puts it higher for me than the Jonathan Frakes film

Fair play I do like seeing the characters as they where, and I love the voice actors. I just expected more from the team that brought us Trapped in the sky and Terror in new york city.

I see!

Well you are very right about this film - and I could not put my name on it why until you said - yes it does not feel like a Thunderbird film - and there is none of the danger element.

Least he carried on Zero-X in Captain Scarlett.

Good depiction of this, especially as we do not see the module leave the mothership.

Excellent work
