I think that's his secret power. He's indestructible, in the same way the golden army from Hellboy is indestructible. Just keeps rebuilding himself.

Well, he is (or was? maybe now just reduced to a great weapon/distraction) an important officer in the Space Pirate army, they collect his DNA or salvage and repair his broken body whenever he loses to Samus.

And he never gets demoted because A: high ranking dragon, and B: she is to the space pirates what Doomguy is to demons.

Samus is my favourite character too! I find the zero suit version fits my play style a bit more.

I love this image. In fact, I took the liberty of recreating it with actual models from the games; would you mind if I posted that on DeviantART as well? I will obviously credit you completely for the basis of the image. Besides, yours is much better than mine (and I didn't include the HUD and Metroids because I was struggling with implementing them).
