Featuring Princess Aveline
Spring, Year 759 of the New Age
Somewhere in the Glenwood, Glenmore
It was just another wonderful spring day, and like days before - it was the same. The sun shined, the grass grew, and fawns all played the same games. Not that that was bad - she loved to play games! Hide and seek, tag, messing with Han, whatever was fun she was all over it! But today, nyeh, none of it kept her attention long.
It hadn’t been long since she learned to really use these ‘leg-thingies’ of hers - and boy oh boy did she enjoy them. Put one foot in the right place and it could take her to so many new places. Not only that, but these feet could knock things over! Rocks were especially fun, since sometimes there would be cool little critters underneath, all squirmy and squishy. She could knock other fawns over, too, but no one bigger than her. Han was definitely too big (he wasn’t called ‘Big Brother’ for nothin’!) but that never stopped her from trying her best to push him down.
However, knocking things into the dirt did not seem appealing - and neither did hide and seek or tag. What was a little fawn to do on a day like this? All her friends and siblings were out in the glade playing those games together, Mama was with the other does, grazing and talking about whatever it was mamas talk about, and she was a bit bored. That was a feeling she wasn’t used to - and it did not make her feel all nice inside, not a bit. Little Ave would give anything for a simple little thing to do!
And just like that, someone listened.
It fluttered off to the side of the glade, watching her. Taunting her. ‘You’ll never be able to catch me!’ it sneered at her. She remembered the butterflies back when she wasn’t quite adjusted to her legs. Back then they laughed and mocked her, she couldn’t chase after them - let alone walk or even stand straight - but today was different! She had mastered the art of ‘legs’, and they could take her after the butterfly! Never again would she not be included in their games, she could keep up with them and they couldn’t do anything about it! Ave would be sure to win against them - and so with one foot in front of the other, she ran after her foe.
The butterfly saw her fast and not-sneaky-at-all approach, and took off into the forest, but Ave was not far behind. Her chase took her into the brush, under and over gnarly tree roots and over flowering bushes. Rocks stood no chance against her mighty leaps! She cleared them in a single bound, but ok - maybe she stumbled on the landing, just maybe - but that wasn’t important to Ave. Never once did she let the little yellow butterfly out of her sights, she would catch it!
Suddenly, it stopped, only giving Ave enough time to slam her feet into the grass and skid to a halt. Why did it stop? Was it tired? Ave could run for days, surely a foe like the butterfly could fly nonstop? But no, it only hovered in the little clearing, and up to the young fawn’s face. Looking at it closer, it was less mean than Ave thought it to be. It wasn’t mocking or rude, it just wanted to play, and now it flew around her as if to say, ‘That was fun! Let’s play again!’. She would gladly play again, over and over until the sun went down if she could! However, a sudden noise behind her scared her new friend, and it darted off back into the woods.
“Princess!” it hollered, crashing through the brush and into the clearing. The hulking figure soon came into the young fawn’s sights, and she recognized it as one of the Guards- or, more specifically, one of the many boring ones. He was large, bulked up, and had a stern expression written across his face. There was no way this one would lighten up, Or was there? Ave could make anyone smile, certainly this stag was no different! So she smiled to him, grinning ear to ear, but her cheerfulness did nothing to him.
“You’re incredibly fortunate that we saw you run off like that. Do you know what trouble you’d be in if you got lost? What were you thinking?” he scolded, looking down on her.
Ave felt the harshness in his words, her own smile dampening some - but she wouldn’t lose it to him. Nope, she’d keep on smiling - all the way back to her mama. But wait, did he ask her a question? She was still getting used to these “words” of hers, but what was she supposed to say?
“B-b-b-b-” she started out, trying to remember how to form the word. With a wide grin, she exclaimed, “Budderfly!”, looking in the direction it had flew off. Ave jumped in place, hoping that maybe the Guard would give up his attitude and join her in the chase after her winged friend, but he didn’t. There was no change behind his gaze. He seemed to have no interest in butterflies; no Guard in Glenmore ever did.
“There is no time for games, Princess” he spoke, “Come now, we must return to the others before your mother or father has my head for letting you get away.”
He started to walk, leading the way through the brush. It would be a long walk back - it had to be. From what she ran, she could have been half-way across the territory by now! Glenmore couldn’t be too big, could it? It was reasonable in her mind - but after walking a short distance with the Guard, familiar voices rang through the trees. Voices of her siblings, her friends, her herd members - voices she had thought that she had ran miles from, but apparently only ran about fifteen minutes away from.
“Go on, now”, the Guard barked when they got back into the clearing, “Go play with the others - and don’t let me or any other Guard catch you running off again.”
