Description
While Laurenz was out enjoying the evening in the woods with Anja, Farhad decided to spend the night lazily with a book and the company of a cat. He was of course oblivious to everything else happening at the time. Laurenz, after waiting for Anja to turn in, raced back to the castle.
He was quite disturbed by the presence of that owl in the woods. He promptly learned about Farhad’s whereabouts and made his way to his chamber.
Farhad heard the knock on his chamber door, without raising his eyes from the book he simply answered.
“Please, come in.”
The door slowly opened and Laurenz appeared behind it with a worried look on his face.
“I hope I'm not disturbing you Farhad.”
Farhad then looked up at Laurenz who was now approaching his bed.
“You’re never a disturbance, my friend. After all, this is your home.” He proceeded to place his book on the bedside table.
“But I can see by your face that you’re not quite happy, did your rendezvous not go as well as planned?”
Laurenz sat at the end of Farhad’s bed. The cat that was sleeping by Farhad’s side was now awake and greeting Laurenz.
“Hello, Fritz.” said Laurenz while petting the cat, then he turned to Farhad.
“It went fine, at first…but then I saw an owl watching us. It was not an ordinary owl. I was half hoping that it was you trying to mess with me.”
Farhad sat up. “My friend, even if I had such ability, I would never do this to you. I have much respect for you, I would not intrude upon your privacy.”
Laurenz nodded. “Yes, I assumed as much…which makes the presence of this owl very problematic.”
“So you haven’t seen this creature before, have you?” Farhad enquired.
“No, I have not…But Anja told me that she has seen an owl just like that at the stable.”
Farhad raised his eyebrow. “You mean the stable right across the herbalist’s shop?”
Laurenz nodded affirmatively.
“Hm, that is cause for worry perhaps, whatever this owl is, is watching either you or Anja, or the both of you, that might mean danger.”
“This is what worries me, but I have no way of knowing where that damn owl came from, what it is or who might be controlling it.”
Farhad smiled.
“That might not be a problem, if we can get a hold of it at least?”
Laurenz looked at him questioningly.
“Please explain…”
“It’s a lesser creature, Laurenz, I will easily be able to read its mind so to speak, if we can catch it.”
“Wait, you can read minds?” Laurenz asked curiously.
“Some minds, yes. Not yours.” he chuckled.
“Not mine?”
“No, I have to admit I tried at first, but you’re like a brick wall, and it’s more interesting trying to understand you by conversing, don’t you agree.”
Laurenz nodded again.
“That’s a very interesting ability, I wonder if it’s something I could learn to do.”
“No doubt, I’d be happy to teach you given the time, but for now let us focus on the problem at hand, eh?”
“Yes, you’re right…the owl…how would we even go about catching it?”
Farhad rubbed his beard thoughtfully.
“Let me think…”
After a few moments of contemplation he seemed to have an idea what to do.
“We should figure out if it’s going after you or after her, first. If it’s watching Anja, that would complicate things, but if it’s watching you, we can definitely put it in a position that would be beneficial to us.”
“Ok, how do we tell?”
“By having eyes and ears open, my friend. But part of it you should do alone and I can watch from a distance, it’s best that it does not pay much attention to me.”
Laurenz nodded again.
“Yes, if you can watch from a distance, maybe you will find a way to catch it.”
“I have some ideas already, as long as you put it in a good enough position.”
“And how about Anja?”
“I suggest you keep some distance, at least until we have dealt with this owl, let’s make sure we don’t put her in danger for no reason.”
“Agreed, I want to be done with this creature as soon as possible, I will tolerate no threats within my walls.”
Farhad nodded.
“That’s right, by worry not, my friend, we’ll get to the bottom of it.”
“Tomorrow then, I will make some rounds around the courtyard, you can follow me from the battlements.”
“Being unseen is my greatest talent, my friend, I won't let you down.”
Laurenz appeared a lot more relieved and less stressed by this point, focusing his attention on petting the cat.
“Then we have a plan. Thank you, Farhad, I don't know what I would do without you.”
Farhad laughed. “You would probably jump on that owl and kill it instantly, which would be a pretty logical thing to do if there were no alternatives.”
Laurenz laughed too.
“Yes, that is within the realm of possibilities, but you have certainly opened up more options. Getting intel from an owl is definitely one of the things I never thought I'd ever do.”
Farhad made a small bow with his head.
“I aim to please, my friend.”
