it's often the problem if you use Painter... but with a good and strong computer all is good... i work usually in 5000x7500 pixels...

Often i use the real bristle brushes but the settings are changing all the time ! it depend what you want to do...
When a setting is appropriate for a particular action (background, hair, skin ...) must register and try to refine with the practice ...
Try to play with the settings in "impasto"... draw to : color and depht... depht between 5% and 10% is usually good... expression: pressure...
