Description Escape

Holly cakes aren't the only things that I like. Most of my time at home is spent reading, if I'm not doing any homework. I practise piano too, and the cello, but I can't really call them my hobbies. In the room I share with Scarlet I have a mahogany shelf where I keep my books. Sometimes I have to stack them up to save space. A large majority of what I read are fantasy stories about unicorns, dragons and faraway places - I suppose it's because they describe my ideal world where good always conquers evil and the ending's never sad.

If you are to look for me at my school, I more than likely will be found hiding in a dark corner of the cafeteria during recess and lunch with an open book next to my food. When at home, you'll probably find me huddled up on my bed with my nose glued to a story. By the time I'm up to the climax I'd happily ignore all my surroundings and forget about time until somebody shouts into my ear that supper is ready.

Nowadays, mama limits the number of books I can buy, mostly because there isn't enough space for an extra shelf. That's why I'm forced to borrow the ruffled and torn books found in public and school libraries. Why they can even be called books I don't know, because they are ripped, crumpled and stained with unidentified substances. Every time I see a page damaged, my heart breaks. Since I was a toddler, my father had already started teaching me how I should take care of objects and animals. I learned that if I don't treat things carefully, my chances of breaking them (and getting smacked) will be maximized.

I miss the times when I could read without Amelia crying in the background, when I had a room to myself with one whole wall adorned with a bookshelf. But at least when I feel upset I have so many worlds to choose from for escaping into. Alas, the joy of reading!
