My father was in Ethiopia with the Italian Army in the 30's. He said that in one city the people took every living creature into their homes every night. That's because hyena's would come in (maybe to eat the garbage). They would attack kill and devour any living thing they came upon, bones and all. They realized they couldn't come into the army camp because soldiers had guns so they steered clear of them and went straight to town.
