Description I've been asked about how I made that last picture [link] , so I made a rather large process reel from the layers in my image. I didn't save some of the other backgrounds that I attempted, but this may help illustrate the process behind this picture. I also included the main times where I added color to the picture to see how it looked.

Toward the end, I fixed up the starts using the method in this tutorial: [link]

I'll do my best to answer any questions. Hopefully, some people will find this helpful.

She's a girl.
I've improved a bit with drawing people since then, but I always find that challenging.

It's definitely an area where I need practice, but sometimes I think it's tough to practice the things that I'm bad at.

How did you do the scales?

Hmm... how to phrase this... I just went back over the picture a few times to add some texture, as well as light and dark areas... That was the start of the scales.
Then, I went over things again to add some sharper line art, to fully develop the texture into scales.
Does that clarify a little?

Thinking about it... It's been a while since I've drawn scales using this style. I should give it another shot some time...

A little but do you think you can show your process of drawing different types of scales?

wow this is awesome. so are all of those pics in the final piece as layers? or are some of them kinda like trial and error with the lights?

Thank you.

Those pictures are what the picture looked like, at different points while I was working on it. For instance, I started with a sketch, actually... then the lines. After that, I added some gradients to roughly define the lighting. Then some highlights and shading.

I have a bit of trial and error with the colors, there. I thought I would show some of the other color schemes that I tried with this piece. After making this process reel, I toned down the green a bit, too. [link] is the final image.

oh man, this is really helpful stuff! So you use more than one layer to work out the lighting? Talk about detail! I've also noticed that you're putting more details to the rocks here, I like the little grass growing out of it :3

Thank you. I'm glad you think it's helpful.
Most of those additional layers are actually on top of that first lineart sketch. I've found that helps make the line art seem a bit lighter, while still using it as a base.

I was quite happy after adding in those plants.
I think they added a lot of life to the setting.

heavy lineart has its uses, but you're great at balancing it out
haha glad you felt that way!

This is pretty awesome
How'd you get that texture in the 5th box? Is it just like a photoshop brush?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromamancer In reply to Manechen [2010-06-20 20:11:22 +0000 UTC]

It's one of the default brushes, not a special one. It's just a round, hard edged brush.

After I got that simple shading down, I sampled some of those shades with the eyedropper tool, and started painting that texture on with a 5px round brush. Those shades I sample then can be used as light, in the darker parts of the picture, or shadow in the lighter parts. I tried to use these shades to add a few more details to give a bit more shape to the face and the legs, and make the shading on the main parts of the body a bit rougher.
