Description A dark planet orbiting a star that has already gone Supernova, the heat and pressure from its parent star's violent death has melted and transformed the surface into a black, shiny glass-like rock called Obsidian, of which gives off a bright shine when the white dwarf sun reflects upon its new facade. Large cracks wrap around the planet's surface, and many meteors and small moons orbit around it, most of which were blasted away from the planet itself...Now, a cold and eerie calmess fills the void left behind by a destroyed planetary system.

My submission to the "dark planet" theme that the newly formed has going. I tried some new things here which I think came out well, but perhaps only for this type of scene, either way, I had lots of free time in the past few days, most of which were spent doing this, so I was able to get it up pretty soon after my last space scene. Enjoy !

Thanks. Most people complain about that. But the way I see it - if the artwork is good enough people will ignore that stuff anyway

It's a great pic, really, but the astronomer in me is screaming "no planet can survive if its sun goes supernova, wich by the way doesnt leave behind a white dwarf but a neutron star, a pulsar or a black hole, but a red giant evaporing into a planetary nebula and a white dwarf could have done the job"
Sorry for the bother and again awesome pic

Really? damn, either the facts I read (granted they from ages ago) were written wrong or I just got mixed up

I think that wa sthe vision I originally had, I should have said just a regular nova rather than a supernova. I guess I get swept up in supernova's because they're more popular

Lol, is it even possible for something to be too in-focus yeah, I sharpened it and upped the contrast since that seemed to be the norm in space images...these days I hardly do that anymore in favour of a more natural shading technique

Wow. this is stunning! How did you make this? Did you paint it all by hand(erm tablet). This is just oustanding. Instant fave!

Chromattix In reply to stargate4ever23 [2009-06-02 01:33:17 +0000 UTC]

I started out with a 3D landscape I made in the Vue program, which formed the rocky close-up moon, the planet's texturing I made in Photoshop and applied to a 3D sphere and rendered that seperately. Once I had the panet and close moon in place, I just painted in exrtra details to make it look nicer and not so "rendered"...I didn't have a tablet at the time I made this either - it was mouse-drawn

Glad you like it! the landscape (which is actually up the top lol) is done in 3D, as is the planet too though the nebula in the background and various "shiny" effects were digitally painted in too, there's even even mix of 3D and digital painting in this one, though I have others which are either completely one or the other (I just try to keep myself varied )

Very nicely done. Your background narrative helps less informed viewers better understand this rather "dark" concept . . .

Yes, even though a picture may be worth a thousand words, a few words may likewise illuminate any work of art.

Chromattix In reply to al12gamer [2009-05-15 01:19:07 +0000 UTC]

Sounds like you have two dilemma's there, and I faced the same when I started out, but problem A -nobody looking at your work, can be resolved by doing somehing about problem B - not being capable... You have the tools and the time, you just need to practice I have plenty of terrible deviations myself, most of which were scrapped or deleted by now, so everybody has to have a rough start

Chromattix In reply to Stollrofl [2009-05-03 14:01:20 +0000 UTC]

Sure did the mouse was all I had for many years, so I learned to make the most of it luckily, landscapes and space scenes are probably one of the few art forms that don't matter too much if you do it by mouse, they are allowed to be a little rough plus some 3D helped in this one too, and 3D actually is easier with the mouse

I think this has to be my most fav piece from your entire gallery. The mood you have captured here is just breathtaking! The darkness is really palpable and the cracks give off this kinetic feeling of the sun's shine running through the obsidian surface. The slighlty orange-yellow bloom in the glow/highlights makes the whole darkness come alive.

Two thumbs up, and that's only because I have just two hands. Hell, I'd give you four thumbs up if you'll allow me to use my toes!

Chromattix In reply to nukeation [2009-05-02 03:13:18 +0000 UTC]

Aha! putting my old, neglected work on my main page for a month is starting to pay off (the last did better in a onth than it had in the year beforehand too ) Glad you liked this one so much, now I know what your tastes are You got it exactly in your decription - sunlight reflecting incredibly long distances into the shiny black cracks on the detsroyed world's surface as for the shiny flare effects - I carefully build up my own from scratch in Photoshop and use them instead of default lens flares...that way I can get a different "lens flare" each time - depending on the effect I want

Oh, and I use my toes too, this joke I have with my brother see's us trying to give each other the finger the most, when we run out of hands, we try to use our toes

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

nukeation In reply to Chromattix [2009-05-02 03:47:23 +0000 UTC]

Yup. You got my taste pegged down poifectly!

You're right - nothing can beat custom "hand made" effects. I love the dull yet crisp gradient in the lens flare glow. Very nicely executed.

Okay, how the heck do you give the finger with your toes? (The sentence itself is weird!) Can you really raise the middle toe? That's useful - not to mention creepy!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to nukeation [2009-05-02 03:48:50 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! and as for the toes...we can't do that, we just muck around and do any random toe movement...that's good enough

seriously this is amazing. I need you to teach me how to do this... O btw ya got an msn?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to mitchellnelson [2009-04-30 07:52:46 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! there are tutorials covering the basics of making planets and such. Then it's up to the artist to develop their own style (since the space art galleries do tend to look pretty much the same until the artists start showing their unique ways...since you already have lots of digital art experience, you have a leg up on it already ) typing things like "planet tutorial" or so-on will yeild some good results here. Some 3D was also used here, but not entirely necessary for such a scene which can be done in Photoshop anyway (I mainly just use 3D to enhance realism and save a bit of time )

I'll note you with the MSN thing too

That's a good comparison actually, yeah, like glass - the rapdid burning of the planet's surface combined with the freezing temperatures left over afterwards would have cracked it all over

I hate to be a planet and be able to feel all that, that would be unbearable.

In reality thouhg - it would happen so gradually that any life would be long gone before it does Our Sun will expand slowly over thousands of years as it starts crawling into its death bed, gradually roasting the Earth and all life on it as it does. Life would be extinguished thousands of years before the Sun dies

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zeraphalanx In reply to Chromattix [2009-04-06 05:49:23 +0000 UTC]

Actually the Sun has another 5 billion years before it swells into a red giant star burning all life on Earth as we know it.

Main sequence stars like our Sun, a yellow dwarf, lasts for billions of years 10 or so. The Sun is only about half way through that cycle. Millions of years from now it'll swell from a blue giant then to a red giant then expel it's out shell and shrink to becoming a white dwarf then eventually it'll become a black dwarf, a burnt out star.

Chromattix In reply to Zeraphalanx [2009-04-06 06:02:30 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, I know that it's about 5 billion years away...I was just referring to those few thousands or perhaps millions of years before it reaches it's full red giant stage

I actaully did an illustration of that scenario here [link]

Zeraphalanx In reply to Chromattix [2009-04-06 06:10:53 +0000 UTC]

In case of the Sun becoming a red giant that'll be in like a 100 million years or so but before that it'll be a Blue Giant star. I heard blue stars are the hottest stars out there.
