Later on, Yukiko realized that her friendship with Chie was never the same after her trip and return. It's not that they had any fights or hard feelings, it was just a slow process of drifting apart. Chie had become so popular and was surrounded by so many people all the time, Yukiko was barely ever alone with her anymore. So many photoshoots, so many interviews, so many appearances with her fellow gainer Rise...

...Chie and Rise had become fast friends in her absence. They certainly had a lot in common, being two of the three most famous "growth models" in the world. They drew crowds of fans wherever they went -- people who knew them more as "Calorie Magic" and "Sumo Girl" than their real names. Rise was rarely seen in anything other than her trademark yellow bikini, and and Chie in her green Sumo getup.

Gaining weight and all that came with it seemed to be the only subject that mattered to them anymore; the celebrity machine around them was relentless. How many times had Rise and Chie been asked if they had any regrets, whether they missed being skinny, and how their boyfriends liked the change?

"Not at all, of course not, and I'm not hearing any complaints!" they'd chirp, rubbing their enormous, jiggling bellies to the delight of their fans.

Yukiko was losing interest in the entire thing, and her job was being done by others anyway. She could be gone for days, and then weeks, before Chie would notice her absence and shoot her a text.

Chie, you've changed, Yukiko thought. Perhaps anyone would under such circumstances, becoming the center of so much illogical attention. Now that "Sumo Girl" existed mostly as a virtual image, Chie had begun to neglect her workouts and training, but certainly kept up the endless gorging. Her and Rise were almost the exact same weight, and seemed to be in some kind of competition to weigh five pounds more than the other. Even more worrisome, they had challenged the still mostly-absent Mitsuru to some sort of contest, to see who could become the "Fattest Girl in the World."

This has gone too far, Yukiko thought, as she erased Chie from her contacts. Entirely too far. If you keep this up, Chie, none of you will be able to walk.

Months later, Yukiko found herself chatting with Fuuka over the whole phenomenon.

"After all those years of trying to stay as thin as possible, who would ever think this would happen?" Fuuku mused.

"I suppose it makes sense," Yukiko sighed, "our society has finally given in and learned to love its own decadence."

Fuuku studied her own flat tummy, pinching the small amount of softness there. "Do you think you could ever do it, Yukiko?"

"What... you mean, get horrendously fat?"

"Yeah. I know, it's crazy, but all that money, all that attention... you have to admit, with all those contracts out there, it's tempting."

Yukiko thought about it for a moment. She tried to imagine what life would be like now if she had become the Aiya Sumo Girl instead of Chie. Was it really that fun, to be so unapologetically greedy and careless? To get so much money and so much attention just for getting fat?

"I admit, it would be... interesting," Yukiko admitted. "It would be interesting. I'm not sure if it would ultimately be worth it, but it would be... well, interesting."
