"As Mari slowly awoke, the memory of what she'd done to Dr. Mizar returned to her. She felt some guilt, but not as much as she thought she might. She began to wonder how she would ever return to her human form without the scientists on her side, but... that thought soon vanished. Return to her human form? Why? She didn't just feel better than she ever had in her life, she felt better than she thought it was possible to feel at all. Her new body -- slender, armored, and strong -- was humming with vitality, and her senses were sharper and more vibrant than before.

She could only take a few steps in either direction, though -- she was clearly imprisoned, trapped in a clear tube no more than six feet in diameter. The ruins of her shredded cocoon filled much of it.

Outside, Trevor Mizar was watching her.

"You... you are finally awake," he muttered through gritted teeth. "I wanted to be here personally for this. You ATE my father, you [expletive deleted.] I can never pay you back fully for that, but I am going to try..."

He began to pace back and forth in front of the tube, his eyes glinting with rage.

"...the plan was always to study you and dissect you, of course. But because of what you did, I will make sure that it will be done my way. Slowly. Agonizingly. Without drugs. Do you hear me? I will use every scrap of knowledge I possess, every tool at my disposal, to ensure you feel as much PAIN as humanly possible, Mari. You will live as long as I can arrange, being picked apart, piece by piece, while you SCREAM for DEATH! Does that sound like a fitting punishment?"

"Like a little boy pulling the wings off a fly?" Mari shot back.

"Indeed," he answered. "Like that, but a thousandfold. We will start in a matter of hours, and I hope..."

But his words faltered.

Trevor didn't put much thought into the cell containing his specimen, because it was simply the most advanced thing of its type that money could buy. Foot-thick diamond-weave Flexiglass, topped with titanium-kevlar plates, reinforced with ambar struts... no openings, no seams, nothing apart from the intercom. It couldn't be more secure under any circumstances...

....it took Mari approximately 10 seconds to breach it. A squirt of her acidic spit from some organ deep in her throat created a bubbling crack in the tube, and her arms began to rip the two halves apart. It shattered into several large chunks. Mari had read factoids like "an ant can lift 50 times its own body weight" all her life, but feeling it was another thing entirely.

Trevor screamed and ran for the exit as two VALE security officers rushed to help him. In seconds, they were unconscious and he was trapped in Mari's embrace. Her insectoid arms were like steel, but they held him almost gently -- gently, but implacably.

She gazed into his terrified eyes with her inhuman orange ones.

"You know, I did think you were cute once," she cooed, leaning in close for a kiss...

No one really knows what took place between them in those ten minutes, but Trevor Mizar's body was found, broken and drained, some time later.

It was about a week after that when Mari's parents finally heard her distinctive knock on the front door of their home. (Each other their kids had a trademark knock.) They had been frantically trying to get in touch with VALE for months, to no avail.

"Mari!? Is that you?" her mother cried, rushing for the handle.

Mari stood with her wings folded behind her as the door was thrown open and her family flocked around to see if their missing child was really there. She smiled. This was going to take some time to adjust, she knew, but her family was very open-minded and taken with nature. Things were going to be be just as they were before... or better.
