Actually, it's Chi-Chi reeling in horror from Turles's informational panel because he alludes that they chose that year on purpose. :3
Vegeta's still so far into daydream-land that he didn't even hear Turles come in.

It's both a funny and bittersweet thing; because in DBO they just run away without telling anybody, but it's got a sad ending. I do feel bad for Chi-Chi; it's worse for her than Goku running off to train Uub, because at least with that she can get Gohan or Goten to track him down.

Yeah, I feel bad for Chi-chi, too. That's why I don't understand why she gets ripped on so much by the community! I mean, jeez, if my hubby just ran off like Goku did, I'd be bitchy, too! Then jump his ass, of course

I find I understand Chi-Chi and her point of view more as time passes. She's someone who really does love her family, wants Goku to actually stick around like he did during those first 5 years, and wants her kids to have a better life than she has. I think her more overprotective aspects with Gohan stem from her losing her own mother at a very young age. One of the guides says Chi-Chi's Mom died of an illness; which makes Goku's heart illness in the Cell arc hit her that much closer to home. The anime tends to blow the "education Mama" part of her personality out of proportion and into something more hardcore than in the manga and that turns some off. (Because who enjoys being reminded of the essay they have to write; or the big exam on Friday?)

Goku and Piccolo push Gohan too, but since it's in fighting and DB's a manga about martial arts, that's less noticeable than Chi-Chi pushing him in furthering his education.

One thing I did think the anime improved on was the idea of Chi-Chi wanting to go into outer space and rescue Gohan and Goku from trouble during the Freeza arc. I think if she'd continued to train she could have at least held on as long as Kuririn did.

Yeah, Chi-chi was one of those characters I didn't understand at all when I first started watching and reading, but going back and watching the original DB helps a lot. Of course, I'm just now going back and rewatching the original uncut DBZ stuff (I started watching Kai *shame*), and it's nice to see her interact with Goku rather than just yelling about Gohan's education and such. *sigh* And it's interesting to know what happened to her mother! Will definitely have to keep that in mind ^^

And, oh yeah, I would've loved to see Chi-chi continue her fighting. I mean, she was the strongest woman on the planet until 18 showed up! And wasn't she even higher than Roshi? I can't quite remember, but, yeah, super sad her character seems to get so downplayed. It was nice to see her training with Goten there for a bit, too, so I always assumed she at least practiced a little. I mean, with Goku as her husband, even though he was dead for those seven years....

Trunks (especially Future Trunks) is so much fun to work with; I was sad when I first found out he wouldn't be returning for the Buu arc.
