Description
Harpy Eagle Harpia harpyja Killa at the Dallas Zoo looks up from a meal. The Harpy Eagle is one of the largest species of extant eagle (the Steller's Sea Eagle outweighs the Harpy Eagle, on average, but a female Harpy holds the record for heaviest bird of prey), and certainly the most powerful. It preys primarily upon sloths and monkeys, but deer, armadillos, peccaries, kinkajou, and other large animals are also included in its diet.

The Harpy Eagle population is currently in decline due to habitat loss from deforestation driven by logging, agriculture, and ranching.
