Description Lanternies are a species thought up by Piinacoloda which we own, along with PugKing Keiith-chan and Nubi-Chan
They are closed but you may pay piinacoloda to make one. See her reference sheet for details : piinacoloda.deviantart.com/art…

Some of the ones on the sheet are in fact for sale:

INFORMATION:
(woo wall of text guys)

General: A brief overview.

Species Name

Lanterny.

Species appearance

Lanternies are  pony-like magical golems with flexible, near-prehensile tails, and plush fur. Their main feature, however, is the lantern they carry and their hollow head, somewhat similar  to a jack-o-lantern.

Size

Slightly shorter than the average pony, but with the magic that powers them, they don’t need to be large.

Habitat

Somewhere abundant in organic materials and ambient magic. They are often found on the outskirts of rural towns.

General Temperment

Shy and elusive, they prefer to remain a myth to ponykind on a whole.

Any Specific Specie Rules or traits that should be discussed

Lanternies do not reproduce as normal ponies do, therefore there shall be NO breeding of this species, though they can form relationships.

Anatomy, Physiology, Biology:  What they do, how they do it, and why.

Body:

A lanterny is a magical golem made of organic materials (the remains of organisms, most commonly plants, though animals are sometimes used) like a timberwolf. No one knows how the species began, though some speculate Discord created them during his first rule. The lanterny is similar to a timberwolf in many ways, but far exceed them in terms of complexity, power, and intelligence, while lacking the *ahem* odor of the wolf.

In each lanterny is a “skeleton” of pure magic, which supports and moves the body. The magic is virtually indestructible, so if the lantery loses a limb or part of it’s body, the skeleton will remain intact. The damage to the body can be repaired through absorbing more organic material. The only necessary areas of the lanterny are the head and lantern. The head cannot be replaced, though it can be repaired from light damage.  It is the head that guides the lanterny, but the lantern houses it’s soul. If the lantern is destroyed of the flame within extinguished, the lanterny dies, it’s body reverting the the materials it came from.

Due to the advanced magics involved in the creation of the lanterny, it does not appear to be made of materials like the timberwolf. Rather, it is furred, like a regular pony. around the neck the fur is thicker, like that of a lion’s mane. Longer manes are less common than shorter ones, as with longer ears. The lanterny’s coat and mane are never saturated colors like a pony, but always natural and desaturated. The hooves of the lanterny are cloven like a deer’s, with long fetlocks on the front but not usually on the back. Their aforementioned flexible tail is hairless and the same color as their hooves, and is used to hold their lantern. The tail is rarely longer than the hock (joint of back leg) when pointed down. They can have an approximation of a cutie mark, but it appears on their lantern, not their flanks. They are usually earth ponies, but can sometimes be pegasi or even unicorns.

The color of the lanterny’s magic and glow is usually yellow, but can rarely be other warm colors. No cool colors. The glow will dim, brighten, sputter or flicker depending on the health and mood of the individual.

Diet

Lanternies feed off ambient magic, which is why they need to stay near towns or natural magical hotspots. When feeding, they wave their lanterns through the air, sending small “sparks” of magic around. The ambient magic will condense around these sparks, which they then consume as they become tangible. If they do not eat them, the condensed magic will eventually form a will-o-wisps. These wisps often choose to stay with their creator as companions- some lanternies will have hundreds of wisps with them. Lanternies need to eat once a month, unless they have exhausted their magic and need immediate replenishing.

Natural Enemies/ Predators

Long ago, lanternies were hunted by ponies for labor and alchemical ingredients, but now that they have passed from the public’s eye their greatest threat comes from magical preadators such as manticores, chimeras, hydras, and their brother timberwolves.

Protection Mechanisms

When startled, a lanterny can let off a blinding flash of light, enabling their escape. Other than that, they possess magically enhanced strength, agility, and endurance, which comes in handy in a confrontation. Those features combined with their stealth and ability to see in very dim light makes them something to be avoided in the night.

Skills (magic, flight, etc)

Depending on the type of lanterny, they may do many things. Unicorns can channel magic, though less proficiently than pony unicorns. They are limited to teleportation, basic levitation and simple charms. Flight in pegasi is very acrobatic, but for short periods of time. Earth, or common lanternies may be slightly stronger than others.

Breeding and Gender (THERE WILL BE NO BREEDING WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM PIINACOLODA)

Lanternies, being magical constructs, have no true gender or DNA in which to make a child, though their forms may mimic pony genders and they may have recreational intercourse. Instead, two or more lanternies may mix a spark from their lanterns together inside a new lantern crafted by their magic. This essentially mixes their magical DNA, making the young lanterny. Babies, until they reach a few years of age, are utterly defenseless and consist of just the magical “skeleton” and their lantern. As they grow, they will learn to form their physical body as a defense. The parent lanternies (who are bonded for life long before making the decision to have a child) care for their youngster until adolescence, when they separate from the group. Lanternies may only create a child in autumn, and only ever a single one. Sometimes, the spark will not take- their equivalent of a stillborn. the magic will instead dissipate like glowing smoke.

A Bit of sociology

What is their general Society like?

Strangers are cordial and polite, while family is very open and joyous. They find happiness in simply living and are very carefree, with no specific currency ( trades and bartering).

Family groups

Lanternies usually live in small family groups of two to four, called herds or spooks, though many choose to be loners. VERY rarely is there a spook larger than four adult members. The lead lanterny is usually the oldest or most powerful individual, with the other adults subservient to them and the children last in the chain of command, though the most protected.

Religion and Law

Lanternies as a society observe a religion of nature and the struggle between Order and Chaos. They believe that balance and harmony between the two is the key to a happy life, as they are the fundamental forces that shape the universe. The only True Law they have is to keep away from the ponies, lest they disrupt the balance. Other disputes are solved by common sense, via appointed judges stationed in set locations- but that’s just for serious matters that CANNOT be settled by the conflicting lanternies.

Does your species have any celebrations or  Festivals:

On each Equinox and Solstice, the lanternies celebrate their beliefs. Chaos is celebrated on the Autumn Equinox, Order in the Spring, and balance in Summer and Winter Solstices.

Life, Lore, and Legends

Origin I.e: evolution, created by this or that

It is not known by even the oldest of lanternies where they came from and why. It is thought by many that Discord, during his first rule of Equestria, created them, yet others say they evolved from the same elemental magic as timberwolves. There are many theories, and none can be proven certain.

Popular Figures

Lanternies have no celebrities, but judges and elders are often revered for their wisdom and guidance

Gods or Goddesses

As they worship Chaos, Order, and Harmony, they see Discord as an embodiment of a god, and the Elements of Harmony as well.
