Description Sketches for historical and fictional characters in my AU China fiction:

The Shanghai Volunteer Corps (fictional):

Lt. Col. Holliway: British commanding officer in Shanghai, Holliway had his baptism of fire with the Irish Rifles in the Great War. Against all recommendations but asumming (correctly) that the Japanese will enslave his men and work them all to death in some camp, Holliway decides to break out and reach the Qing Army lines and continue fighting or go down trying.

CSgt. Meechan: the Highlander bandmaster and piper of the Scottish Company. He is with Holliway and the others in the mutiny against the Municipal authorities that are about to surrender to the Japanese... And insists that such a bold action must be heralded by the proper bagpipe tune, staring directly at the enemy's eyes like a giant, metaphorical, middle finger.

Sikh Punjabis: Recruited in British India, these men composed the majority of the rank and file in Shanghai and Hong Kong's police forces. Holliway counts on them to join his break out attempt, even against the wishes of defeatist officers.

Nanking Safety Zone (historical):
John Rabe: Commercial representative for Siemens AG in China, he first knew Puyi in 1927 qhen the Emperor contracted the Germans to build a eletrict system for the Imperial Palace in Mukden. Ten years later, Rabe is trying everything, from using his status as a Nazi Party member to writting for help from the very top (Hitler, Puyi, Chiang kai-shek and others) to save the 200 thousand people in the Nanking Safety Zone.

John Maggee: An American reverend and missionary, Maggee joins Rabe and others to oversee the Safety Zone, and his clandestine films and photographs are to this day the main proof of the Nanking Massacre. Trapped in a ring of Hell by his own will, Maggee must provide comfort to people who, by all accounts, were abandoned even by God.

Minnie Vautrin: Β Another American missionary and president of the Ginling College, Vautrin joins the Safety Committee to protect the young girls of the orgy of mass murder and rape. Unfortunately for her, the Japanese Army isn't impressed by her morals and proceed to brutalize every Chinese female from 8 to 80 right before Vautrin's eyes.

The only thing better would be a few Gurkhas, the fiercest warriors to ever wash any battefield with the blood of their enemies, but Holliway has to make the best with what he has.

I remember reading that whole companies of Argentine troops surrendered to the British on the Falklands when the rumour went out that there were Gurkhas in the British lines.

This reminds me of an entry on TV Tropes about elite troops in which was mentioned that, at one point in time, it was a war crime to employ Swiss mercenaries. I think they are the Alpine counterpart to the Gurkhas. It's a shame though that very few Gurkhas get to enjoy a decent retirement. I mentioned this in the bio of one of my characters:Β

Thanks so much!
I imagine the SVC (at least those who choose to follow Holliway) to be like the WWI Lost Battalion, fighting their way like a guerilla unit until reaching the Qing lines, where the officers can be really useful and distracting the Japanese long enough for the refugees flee the main cities like Nanking.

It's just that you have him with a freshly discharged weapon asking. "Any Further Questions." Like he executed a defeatist.

Looks like a good scene. One of the main problems of the mutiny is how to deal with the defeatists. If they keep their mouths shut, that's fine. But how to be sure one of them isn't going to snitch? Tough choices...

Depends on how much of a bunch of self-centered dogs with their tails between their legs the League of Nations is by 1938.

After getting the foreigners out first, of course. Including the military, something Holliway won't accept.
