And at the end of the eighth round, the impossible happened: Gil, the Boxing League Champion, the Machine Girl, was knocked out by a rookie! A straight to the chest sent Gil to the mat, and so painful for her was the expectation of her fans who expected to see her get up and pay back. For Gil, physically, it wasn't as bad as in other fights, because even with two black eyes and a dislocated arm (as she discovered after the fight was over), she didn't fall when facing the girl from Nova Scotia in the qualifiers for the regionals. Au contraire: she not only knocked her out but pulled out a front tooth with an uppercut and forced Miss Nova Scotia to wear a cervical collar because of the subsequent fracture in her jaw. Even though she didn't like to brutalize her opponents, that idiot was asking for a beating and Gil was more than willing to give her one.

Now Joy was stepping on her stomach and Gil felt the soft rubber sole against her skin. That defeat was more humiliating for Gil than all the other three in his almost perfect record: the finalist for Muskoka, a country girl who managed to break a log with a punch, it was no surprise that it had the same effect on Gil. The Rainy River girl, what a killer hook! Gil couldn't take the 14th round. Her only knockout defeat so far. And finally the girl from Durham, her last defeat. Gil's chin hurt for days after that fight. But they were all adversaries and fighters like her, almost like sisters in battle...

But Joy ?! That valley girl? How could Gil lose to her? No matter the rational explanations, Gil couldn't assimilate that. It was... unacceptable ... Gil was losing consciousness again...

Joy, however, was living a dream! Half the audience applauded and shouted her name. There was no cohesion or money involved. An entire arena screamed her name! Her trainer for the first time smiled. Considering that the only other thing that could have that effect on Moshe would be sight the IDF Air Force strafing terrorists with high-powered cannons, Joy was pleased to have had an equally devastating performance.
Among the crowd, someone waved an Israeli flag among the various flags of the United States, after all, Joy had been born there (in New York, especifically).

When Gil regained consciousness, she was being supported by her father and Rodney, her faithful boyfriend. The fallen champion tried to maintain her dignity and wished it were blood rather than tears that were coming out of her eyes. But still, Gil could have a little comfort that Joy didn't have: no matter how dedicated or loving substitute authority figures in her life could be, they couldn't replace a real family. When Joy returned home, there would be no one there to welcome her and admire her victory laurels.

Okay, she thought. "I'm used to it. At least I finally got it! I did it! Gil lost in front of millions to me!"

Joy was elated. She was HAPPY. It was such a rare feeling! Aside from victory, Joy only found pleasure in the thoughtless moments that she could pause in the tireless search for victory and the total humiliation of those against whom she competed. From time to time Joy strolled in the city park with her pet dog, a Toy Poodle called Gigi, and escaped the diet with some treats or the typical foods served at family celebrations, like Hanukkah or Christmas.

When she didn't obtain the immediate subservience of those around her, Joy was relentless. Since the age of two, Joy has monopolized the 1st place in beauty and talent contests. Her father didn't approve, he thought those unworthy expressions of the heiress of a renowned dynasty of bankers and industrialists, but he liked it when Joy showed him a new trophy or a ribbon, bouncing with glee.

But.... things changed as the marriage deteriorated until the divorce and the battle for Joy's custody. Joy's mother, Madeline, tried to project her own image on her daughter. One of the reasons for the divorce was his unilateral decision to have Joy undergo a rhinoplasty to "correct" Joy's "Jewish nose", which her mother thought was ugly and detrimental to her voice quality. When her father found out, he was furious. Not only there was NOTHING wrong with Joy's nose, but she was just seven years old when she underwent surgery. Madeline ignored all warnings about potential damage to health or self-esteem. She wouldn't let those pesky issues get in the way of shaping the perfect representation of her unfullfiled dreams.

And then came that day when that girl stole her victory in a tap dance contest. Giovanna Maria Powell, aka "Gil", had become his enemy for life. Joy would not rest until publicly humiliating Gil as she imagined having been humiliated. Well, Joy made it ....
