It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
- Excerpt from Invictus by William Ernest Henley

The deep chocolate stallion raced in the still twilight air, his striking pale gold tail dancing in the wind behind him. Thunder boomed overhead, yet his pace didn't slow. He put all of his being into catching the shape that was running swiftly ahead of him, a being with the shape of a horse, yet it gave off a strange blue light. Bright sparks few up in great numbers when those glowing hooves struck the ground, then shimmered white-hot and died, like small stars desperate to light up the overcast sky. Two figures watched the chase from a hill in the distance, a mare and her foal. Upon seeing the stallion running furiously, she steered her colt away from the spectacle, and pair went to sleep wondering why he was chasing nothing.

The stallion tried to scream at the glowing horse to stop, but he was gasping for breath and could make no sound. All of his energy had to be put into moving forward, and so he clamped his mouth shut and tore on, his legs flying. A blur of movement. The glowing horse took a sharp turn right, and they were suddenly swallowed by a thin forest, the other horse's body sending spears of flickering blue light cascading into the darkening wood, illuminating the trees. Through the stallion was powerful, he was starting to tire and had to take great care to not trip over anything. Through the trees they wove, the strange horse dodging obstacles with infuriating grace and ease while the dark stallion began to struggle to keep up with the horse that didn't seem to falter. When did the chase begin? He didn't know. Why was he chasing this strange glowing horse? He didn't know. All he knew was the deep, unsettling feeling in his stomach, a tingle that had kept him awake for the past few days. He'd had little sleep, and it was entirely possible that he was imagining everything. It felt so real. His breath came faster now, his lungs on fire. He poured everything he had into running, and the world seemed to slow down, the muted sound of his pounding heart filling his sensitive ears. He started to feel like he was moving in slow motion, and details sharpened. The tang of rain rich in the air, the electricity built up in the clouds, the edges of the leaves shrouded by a silver-blue glow, the soft hiss of his mane and tail in the air. Ethereal. Peaceful. Surreal. The trees parted ahead, and his hooves were hitting grass, then soft sand. How long had it been? Hours, minutes, seconds- time ceased to exist. Now was all that mattered. The sand transitioned to something else, something smooth and supple, like running on fine silk. Looking around, he realized that he had come abreast with the glowing horse, and that they were running on the surface of a lake. With awe, he drank in the shattered blue light from the horse beside him chasing shadows over the water, the way the droplets sprang up from its feet and reflected the light. He did a double take when he looked at his companion properly. It was not a horse with a glowing body, it was a horse made of pure blue light so bright it hurt to stare. His companion shimmered ever so slightly, uncertain like the surface of the lake they ran on, and it regarded him out of the corner of its white-hot eye. Watching. Knowing. Feeling. The blue horse was slowing, and the great stallion felt a twinge of sadness. Their journey together was coming to an end, he could feel it. When he slowed to a walk, he realized he wasn't tired anymore. His whole body buzzed with energy, his heart steadily pumping pure fire through his veins. He felt like he weighed nothing, he felt like he could take on the biggest dragon and win, he felt like he could run forever. They stopped in the middle of the lake, the dappled stallion's hooves making small ripples on the surface of the water while his companion's made none. He stood. Watching. Waiting. The clouds above them parted slightly, allowing a few golden rays to scatter across the water and embrace the blue light along the calm surface. Then the mood suddenly changed, and he winced as the world became unmuted, and a high pitched whine assaulted his sensitive ears. He snorted in annoyance, head ringing. His companion started, and opened its mouth in a silent scream as lightning struck it. The image shattered, blue light dissipating with a sickening sizzle when it touched the water. The sun's now blood red light seeped through the clouds, and cast a harsh glow on his chocolate coat. Quickly becoming nervous, the stallion shifted on his feet. The water beneath his hooves became unsteady, churning with the new wind that had picked up. For the first time, he was afraid of drowning. As the wind grew stronger, darkness started to fall, and much quicker than it should. The bloody light stayed, illuminating land in patches while the nameless dark bore down on him. The darkness laughed at him, the denizens of hell nibbling at his heart, wanting to steal the fire within. He writhed on the water, hopping from foot to foot, trying to keep a level head. He started to feel faint, like he was being deprived of oxygen, and something inside him snapped. He reared on his powerful hind legs, screaming at the sky. He wanted to challenge whatever god brought him here, he wanted to- his thoughts were cut off by a wave of pure terror. Landing back on all four legs, he slowly, cautiously, looked up at the sky. He was having trouble standing because he was shaking so badly, and the water wasn't helping things. The godless sky parted with a sick tearing sound, leaving a gaping black hole in the heavens. It was silent for a moment, then things began to fall. The shapes of winged equines. They fell and they burned and they turned to ash in the infinite dark while twisted and poisonous laughter hung in the air and threatened to squeeze the life out of him. It filled his lungs, and made it hard to breathe, and he was dying, he was sure of it, as sure as he was of life when he was born. The darkness crushed him until he could stand no more, and all he could do was collapse and watch them burn while the pitiless lake reflected their deaths back at him, their great light made a mockery of in their seemingly tiny reflection. The inky darkness, thick as molasses, threatened to choke him. It whispered in his ears, frayed at his sanity, ate at his brain. Slow your breathing, it suggested. Still your heart, it urged. Feel no more pain, it tempted. His eyes felt heavy, and he could still see the burning shapes when he closed them. He swore he could hear their screams. He would accept the offer, he would slip into the soulless black and be damned for eternity. The pain dulled, his breathing slowed, his muscles relaxed...and it was ruined by startling blue light stabbing his eyes through the lids, stopping him, urging him to get up, telling him to gather his strength. He resented it at first, sedated by the thought of release. He wanted to leave, he didn't want the pain, he didn't want the responsibility. As his sluggish brain picked up pace, he began to feel things again. First panic, then fatigue, then the pain, incredible, unplaceable, unimaginable pain. The blue light was with him, guiding him, giving him strength. Blinking, he stood in the lake again, only the smallest tremor could be seen in his legs. His companion looked at him with those pure white eyes, knowing the struggle, knowing it would be ok, respecting his strength. It bowed to him, and he realized that there was a steady gold light that joined the blue in the laketop dance. He knew inside the light was his, and it filled him with unimaginable wonder. Raising its head, his guide turned to the sky, but the stallion was afraid to look up again. Gathering courage, he too lifted his head, and sucked in a startled breath. The world was a mass of shimmering golden threads, not unlike those on his body. They connected everything, from the deer in the forest, to the birds in the sky, to him. Each had their own, beautiful light. He let out a soft cry as a small songbird was brought down by a falcon, and the light left its limp body. It traveled through the air, small shimmering particles of pure gold, and floated to the shore ahead, bringing life to something new. Feeling very tired, the stallion's knees finally gave out, the water seeming to rise to catch him. He felt the warmth of his companion, and his skin tingled briefly when the glowing horse touched its nose to his flank, simple gesture that meant everything. Sighing contentedly, the stallion fell into a proper sleep for the first time in days.

He woke the next day, body sore like he had been running all night. He stood near the trees by a lake, wondering how he got there, and trying to see if he could discern a meaning in the rustle of the leaves. Snorting at himself for being ridiculous, he walked away, vaguely remembering something about burning horses, golden threads, and blue light. It must've been something he ate. He picked a direction and started walking gingerly, only pausing for a millisecond to wonder what it would be like to walk on water. As the dappled stallion made his way, someone stepped out from the trees, pale eyes filled with complex emotion and thought. Watching. Waiting. Knowing.

Basics

Name: Emyr

Meaning: "king" in Welsh

Age: around 5

Personality Traits: Childish, blunt, open-minded, transparent, cowardly, determined, spontaneous/flexible, calm under pressure, attempts to be friendly

Full Personality: Emyr still has a long way to go in terms of maturity. He still handles things like a foal would, and is prone to tantrums when things don't go his way. He does notice his behavior and tries to work around it, but he sometimes can't control himself, even if he wants to. He loves to do things on the fly and go with whatever's thrown at him, but he does spook easily and tends to chicken out if he overthinks something (like bailing last minute on a jump if he suddenly thinks is too high). He tries to make friends with others, but he has trouble being around others. He has no filter between his brain no his mouth, which often results in him saying things before he even has time to process what he's saying. He thinks he's good at not showing emotion, but he's an open book. He also doesn't like being social and would currently balk at being a leader, but there are some Drakes who think he will live up to his name and become a good leader some day.

Emyr's flaws:

He feels the need to impress anyone and everyone. He ends up trying to put on a persona and shove his true self down to do so. This usually ends up going wrong for him since he's not good at being anyone other than himself.

He's afraid of taking risks. He did everything late; from walking, to leaving his dam, to learning how to defend himself. He needs to learn that mistakes are important, and the he should make more to learn how to be better.

He's too hard on himself. He takes everything out on himself, and tends to isolate himself from others because he thinks he's a bad influence. He needs to learn how to accept himself for who he is.

Well...um...I have no idea of I can even compete with the other amazing artists trying for this boy, but I can try? x'D He's so purdy

Whelp, I did so many things I'm extremely uncomfortable with xD Hopefully you'll notice that I sacrificed my soul to do this by looking at my gallery! If it's obvious, then yay, I dids good x3

I had to find the time to finish it when exams are next week >.> I started as soon as the contest opened, and I've been working on it at night since to finish. Hey, it's worth it. Even if I don't win, I've proved to myself that can do things like this if I try hard enough 8D And that story was hella fun to write. I have hope though /crosses fingers/

I really wanted to make this bigger, but my iPad can only handle up to 1080p canvas sizes without crashing every two seconds and I'm not used to drawing on PSE yet //cries

I will be editing/tweaking through the next few days to fix some things that are bothering me c:

I'm so nervous xP He would be my first Drake! :') Good luck to everyone else who entered. Seriously, you guys are all amazing artists. He'll go to a good home no matter who wins ;w;

Damn is right! My eyes can barely withstand how glorious you made the background. GLORIOUS. How does one fit so many various shades while remaining monochromatic?? THE STORY SHOOK ME to my core. You have a wonderful way of writing. If i could clone the horse so to have multiple winners, I would. You should be proud, this gem of a deviation shines above your day-to-day and I definitely downloaded it to drink it all in. Bravo!! Well done.

By using about 50 filter layers. The stupid thing actually used to be blue....

Ahhh, thank you so much ;0; This was honestly the hardest I've ever worked on anything ever, and I'm super happy it had the effect it did! I was actually very worried that the story was too silly and the art so monochromatic it looked boring //shot It was a great fun, and hopefully I can do even better in the next art auction, whenever that happens to be ;D Anyway, I shall be stalking the group so that I may one day own a Drake because the group seems awesome
