Description If you were to approach me a couple years ago and tell me that not only would I be doing fanart, but I'd be doing ANIME fanart, I'd probably spit in your face and accuse you of being a crazy hobo.

But then I discovered Studio Ghibli. I didn't actually watch their films until I was in college (sad, yes?) and I absolutely fell in love with them.

Myazaki has a great storytelling style and Princess Mononoke really brings it out. Even the "villains" have a motive and are well developed, nobody is demonized... and the artwork is breathtaking.

So here we have San and her wolves (which I always thought looked more like big white german shepherd dogs but WHATEVER) a'runnin' through ze forest.

Brush and ink with watercolors for the colorful bits.

Miyazaki <3
I think Nausicaa > Princess Monoke but I love them both. It's Miyazaki's little quirks and oddities that just get me. I'm someone that likes anime, but I think he's in an almost different category.

Grave of the Fireflies is supposed to be pretty heavy antiwar stuff...If you watch it, let me know what you think.

I've never seen Grave of the Fireflies, I don't think I've seen a copy of it in any of the stores around here at least. And I've been looking! D:

Nausicaa was good, I love the giant bug dudes, I spent forever trying to draw one after seeing the movie but I couldn't.

I love the wolves!! I have to say the fur is done almost spot on in shading and the anatomy of the wolfs are beautiful. Probably because wolves happened to be another one of my creatures I hold dear to my heart. This is water color with india ink no? I have to say the texture and shading is done awesomely with watercolors. This has to be one of your better pieces that you have me critique. I guess I like how the human on top is not so detailed because it makes the animals stand out so much more. I can see the mask is drawn well and it doesn't draw my attention away too much which I like. But mostly to the wolves and the landscape and how incredibly crafted it was done. Well done!! Good job!!

Thanks so much.
Yes, ink and watercolor, as per my usual. I think I need to branch out away from them for a bit though.

Spirited Away was nice.
I believe you should make some No Face fanart.

I should. His epic freak-out was definitely the highlight of the show. EATING AND EATING AND THEN CHASING AND BARFING!

That is probably the best aspect of Miyazaki's writing, that he can portray a conflict without making it black and white, or even gray and gray. He shows us how even two good people can find themselves at odds, showing us the need to understand our enemies, and even if we continue to fight them to do so without hatred.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CindarellaPop In reply to FakeKraid [2011-02-15 04:15:25 +0000 UTC]

Exactly. Everyone gets to tell their side of the story.

FakeKraid In reply to CindarellaPop [2011-02-15 04:18:37 +0000 UTC]

In 'Princess Mononoke', even the real villain, the greedy and selfish Jigo, is only greedy and selfish. He's perfectly hospitable and friendly unless you actively oppose his interests, and even then he'll still try to reason with you. He's a far cry from the cackling, idiotic madmen that serve for villains in most cartoons.

Plus, he knows when to give up and he doesn't hold a grudge.

CindarellaPop In reply to FakeKraid [2011-02-15 04:21:16 +0000 UTC]

True, true. Even the so-called bad guys are multidimensional.

FakeKraid In reply to CindarellaPop [2011-02-15 04:23:00 +0000 UTC]

Plus he has a big red nose, and gets voiced by Billy-Bob Thornton in the American dubs, which just makes him lovable and cuddly and no I'm not gay.

I LOVE this to pieces!

I grew up with Studio Ghibli, and I think Miyazaki is a genius. I love his style and stories. Some from books I didn't hear about until I watched his movies but now I can't stop looking for them so I can see why he made his own versions of them.

I remember seeing Totoro when I was very young and not understanding it. Then the only anime I got was bad cheesy cheap nineties stuff that turned me off from it until I was in college.

I saw a lot of anime when I was younger, didn't get some of it but they were entertaining.
I admit though, ones that I liked the most and kept my attention was Sailor Moon and Gundam Wing. Gundam the better of course.

I was like, 6 though when I started to watch Sailor Moon, my excuse was the colors!

I looove Myazaki. Sometimes I think he was trippin' balls when he wrote his movie scripts, but the man rarely disappoints! The backgrounds for the movies are just phenominal.

Your wolves are getting way better, by the way. Great anatomy.

The subtitles on the original japanese version are unreal. I mean...I know enough about tanuki in Japanese folklore to understand that, yes, their man-bits are very prominant, but how on earth did they think putting that in a kid's movie was a good idea?

This movie is fantastic~ My roomie owns it, and we watch it a lot.
Kiki's Delivery Service, Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away and especially Ponyo, I love them all~. He has such an amazing way of getting his ideas onto the screen, and tells the stories amazingly.

You definitely did Princess Mononoke justice. c: The mediums you used for this gives it a scroll type appearance, and I really dig that.

I really liked Princess Mononoke, but as for the rest of Myazaki's stories, I don't have much use for them. Though, I haven't seen all of them. I hear Grave of the Fireflies is both very excellent, and will more than likely lead to taking shots of gasoline.

Great picture though.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CindarellaPop In reply to KasiasDragon [2011-02-14 15:41:34 +0000 UTC]

That's fair enough, not everyone is going to like them. I haven't even heard of Grave of the Fireflies so I gotta look that up.

I DO really want to see Pom Poko though, for the sheer hilarity of it. The little tanuki use their magic ball-sacks as a weapon.
