It does look very clean, and of course your backgrounds are win, but if I had one gripe it would be how smooth and blend-y everything is. Dramatic shadow happens. Don't be afraid to put some sharper contrasts in. Particularly on the hair, which while I can understand not showing every single strand if you're going for a more anime/cel shaded style, but anime shading will usually show the suggestion of locks of hair.
(Then again, someone else liked the subtle shading, so I don't want to affect your style, yadda yadda.)
I really had to look hard at it to find flaws, which is good, but I also had to look hard at it to find some of the nice details you put in.... which I'm not sure if that's good or bad. Upon maybe my third hard look, I noticed that Rukia has a bit of a white line around her hair, which looks suspiciously like someone cleared the non-character part of the layer with the magic wand tool, and didn't clean up afterwards. Ideally, I would clean that up with a 1px eraser, (I wouldn't have it on 100 opacity, either.... but you use photoshop, whereas I use PSP, and the opacities tend to vary between programs. I'd say you should have to pass the mouse over twice to clear it completely, or else your lines might be too harsh, but that's just personal taste.) This way is time-consuming and annoying as all hell, so simply darkening that spot to match her hair would solve the problem with a lot less effort.
I have no problem with Rukia's coloring. She looks fine to me.
Considering this is your first try, it's definitely awesome. Now, to goad you into doing some lineart.... :3

Thanks for the concrit! Good points, all; will keep them in mind for next time.
Lineart? You don't mean that actual drawing itself, do you? Because, BWAHAHAHAHA. No. Cinnie has no actual artistic skillz. At all.

I love the background texture and colors. And I think you're shading is quite good. The blade could use a little shining up, but meh that is a small detail. I think you've done a lovely job especially if this is your first time. Far better than anything I could try to color on the puter.

Rukia's skin tone looks okay to me also. I really appreciate the detail you put into Ichigo's hand, with the shadows from the metacarpi; it's subtle, but it works very well. I like how you did the background, too.

Personally, I like minimal coloring also, so don't beat yourself up over shading X3 And Rukia looks a-ok over here! Maybe your monitor is secretly changing its settings as you sleep... >_>

You should put bells and an eyepatch on it, then change the startup noise to his maniacal laughter to enhance the experience. One must -live- Bleach, not merely see it!

...if I could find a soundfile of his crazy laughter, I would SO do that. Now I need to find an eyepatch and some bells...

Awesome! I think you're too hard on yourself. I like the coloring job. Very smooth and clean. And Rukia's skin tone on my monitor looks fine. YAY.
