great! how do you get such a bright shading (as around the nose, for example) with charcoal? you really did a great job here, especially the eyes.. and the apple^^ and the fingernails! great job, for doing it with charcoal!

Thanks a lot!
Well, I suppose I achieve light skin tones simply by adding a small amount of charcoal, smoothing with Q-Tips and Kleenex, and then adding additional layers of shading until I'm pleased with the results.
Hope that answered your question. (=

hmm not sure, i somehow can try to smooth it as much as i want and i never get this tone... but thanks for trying to explain it to me^^
you're welcome.^^

OUTSTANDING!

Would you be so kind as to share some tips (i.e. materials, techniques) on how to work with charcoal - I love how it allows you to get really deep blacks, but I'm horrible when it comes to depicting fine details with it.

Thank you for your comment. (=

Well, to be honest with you I've only been drawing for a short while myself and am still experimenting with the supplies I use... But what I've learned so for is that things like Kleenex and Q-tips work best for blending, and tortillions and blending stumps for finer details. As for my brand of charcoal, I use soft Prismacolor compressed charcoal sticks, and use Primo charcoal pencils in varying hardnesses. For this picture I used Bristol Vellum paper, but I'm still trying to find what the best paper for charcoal for me is.
Hope that helps!

Thank you very much! All the info you provided definitely helps - especially since I already possess almost every item you listed. I'll try Kleenex and Q-tips for blending for the future. Please let me know if you find a particular brand/type of paper that works especially well for charcoal
