THE STORY OF THE WAND, by Geraint Ollivander:

“On one especially tempestuous night, I was very preoccupied with closing up the shop for the day when the door quite suddenly burst open. I nearly fainted, it gave me such a fright. I looked to the entrance to find a rather stout man in very rough shape. Clearly a brawler or duelist, his nose and arm were bleeding (much to my chagrin, as he had sullied the new rug I had just placed earlier that week). Apart from his large build, what immediately caught my eyes was the intensely confident look in his hazel eyes, framed by his disheveled red mane.

W-what can I do for you, my good sir?” I stammered, still shaken from his explosive entrance.
“A wand,” the man replied, and proceeded to produce from his pocket a gnarled stick of a wand, broken cleanly in two.

“M-may I examine this, s-sir?” I asked, as I pointed to the man’s sad, broken wand with a trembling hand. The large man’s stance softened visibly as he chuckled and put a large hand on my shoulder.

“Gryffindor. Godric Gryffindor. You’ve nothing to fear from me, friend.” He said. “My apologies for my boisterous entrance. I’ve just been ambushed by a sore loser from a recent duel and 5 of his lackeys. They were no challenge, save that one of them snuck up behind me and cleaved my wand in two”

Though his appearance was no less frightening, for the first time since his appearance I noticed a deep well of courage in the man that I couldn’t help but admire.

“What are you looking for in a wand?” I asked.

“Something of great power… a close companion for my many adventures.” He said with a twinkle in his fiery hazel eyes.

I couldn’t help but notice the aura of sheer power emanating from the man as I sized him up. Nothing ordinary would do for this one.

Through recent experimentation, I had found what I believed to be a good match for brave duelist like Godric in Red Oak with a Griffin feather core. Red Oak, as those learned in wand lore know, are especially potent wands in the hands of witches or wizards who are quick-witted, and very capable duelists. Griffin feather cores themselves are proud and powerful, making this particular wand quite formidable.

After producing the wand from the store room, Godric’s eyes lit up with anticipation- generally a sign of a good match. The very moment he held the wand in his hands, the palpable aura of power emanating from the large man seemed to explode, much like the windstorm outside.

“This is it!” Godric exclaimed. “Though…” he hesitated, “It could use a bit of pizazz.”

That was the first time a witch or wizard ever asked me to add anything to a wand I had so painstakingly created. From his neck, Godric produced a large, golden pendant in the shape of a lion’s head.

“Let’s put this on the pommel,” he said. After an incredulous look, I proceeded to join the wand and the somewhat gaudy pendant together.

“That’s more like it,” said Godric with a rather large grin on his face. He slammed down a pouch full of galleons and tramped out the door.

Though somewhat brash, I could tell that this man had a protective courage about him that would be the talk of many generations to come.
