Description

I am still waiting to get the entire set, but let's start out this month with what I have! The photographer is a friend of mine who just got a job in China and is moving next month, so we have to be understanding

What do you know about Hela or Hel? Most people automatically go with Kate Blanchett's amazing role as Hela in Thor, and yes her costuming was very sexy. In the Norse lore, Hel was one of Loki's children. A lot of people have a problem with her, but I think she's gotten a bad rap by some Christian monks (with their understanding of good vs evil). The most complete story we have about Hel, revolves around the god Baldr, who was killed through Loki's trickery, and then remained in the underworld again due to Loki's trickery. I love old mythology and I may go into the story later. Suffice to say, many later authors portrayed Hel as cold and cruel, a goddess of death.

Consider also, this...while warriors would go to Valhalla or Folkvangr, those who died of old age or sickness would go to Hel's realm. Christian writers cast this as a version of the Hell in  their religion, but we really don't know how the pagan Norse viewed the realm. We do know, from their stories, that when Baldr died, Hela prepared a lavish feast in his honor for when he arrived.

While this particular set may appear a bit harsh, I'm looking forward to sharing a softer side of Hela later: a side that welcomes sick children and families into her realm, a side that relishes spring when it appears, a side that accepts death and the responsibility of caring for it seriously.

Cool shot.  Up until Kate Blanchett, I always felt like Hel was one of the more overlooked Norse goddesses.

Thank you! I love researching mythology, and while this set turned out a bit dark and creepy, I'm looking forward to exploring more this year!
