Littlebeak stayed silent on her perch as she watched the other birds chirping at each other in argument. She was a bold little bird, but she didn't like the fighting within the flock. Not now that a threat was looming over all the birds in Large Oak Wood. Slate the nuthatch was clinging upside down on the branch above Snowwing as he listened to the arguing. Snowwing fluffed up her feathers in annoyance as she gazed at the birds around her.

''What do you all expect us to do? We don't stand a chance against Crushclaw or the blackbirds,'' said the beautiful McKay's Bunting.

''We share an enemy with the blackbirds,'' said Razor the waxwing. ''I'm sure they'll be willing to join all of us against Crushclaw.''

Azure the Indigo Bunting nodded his agreement. ''We already got the jays and woodpeckers to join us.''

''But we still don't know what Crushclaw is up to,'' Snowwing pointed out. ''We can't just form a flock army and go up against him.''

''What about the hummingbirds?'' Littlbeak chirped from her perch.

The other birds turned to look at her as she dove off her branch and swooped up to land next to Snowwing. ''The hummingbirds would be great spies. They're small and fast. Crushclaw would never even know he was being watched, and surly the hummers could outfly him if he spotted them?''

''Would the hummers be willing to take that risk?'' Greenwing the Painted Bunting asked. ''They really aren't on Crushclaw's radar, so why would they risk their lives for us?''

''Crushclaw is a threat to all of us, Greenwing,'' said Flame the Oriole. ''Who knows who'd he recruit to join him.''

''I'll find the hummingbirds and talk to Sunflash. Maybe he and his flock will be willing to help us stop Crushclaw,'' said Littlebeak.

''If they agree, maybe they can spy on the blackbirds too,'' chirped Flame. ''I don't trust Nightwing and his lot. I wouldn't be surprised if those nightmares on wings join Crushclaw. They are all after the same thing.''

''Very well. It's worth a try. Find Sunflash and ask if he'll join us,'' Snowwing nodded towards Littlebeak.

''I'll go with you,'' Chirped Fig. The little male Chickadee admired Littlebeak and felt quite protective of her.

''Let me come too,'' Slate called as he flew down from his upside-down perch and landed next to Fig. ''I've never been to that part of the forest before. Plus, we'll be safer with more sets of eyes.''

''That's it then,'' Snowwing nodded. ''The three of you will leave at first light tomorrow.''

Littlebeak nodded and fluffed out her feathers with excitement. If she could talk the hummingbirds to join them, they just might have a chance to get the upperwing against Crushclaw.
