Description
A good pic of the OLS which is used to aid aircraft in the landing on board a carrier. In movies and TV shows you might hear lines like "Your 3/4 of a mile call the ball" "Roger Ball" well this is what they are refering too. Its funtion is to relay glide path information to the pilot "in the groove" letting them know if they are too high just right or too low and when the LSO is telling the pilot to wave off to go around and try again.

In the movie TOPGUN when "Couger" is coming in to land in that situation it would be a 100% no doubt about it wave off.
