Thank you very much Anne.
There is a bit of background to why I took this up.
There is a rise of hindu fundamentalism in India and christian fundamentalism in America these days -as a reaction of violent muslim fundamentalism.
I wanted to record the fact that
1. islam has a peace-loving dimension
2. spirituality, ascetism is not a monopoly of any particualr religion. Devishes from sufi sect in islam are like mendicant friars in christianity or sanyasis in hinduism. People who have forsaken all material, worldly posessions, live on alms and spend the life seeking God.
This one was quite well received when I showed it to many groups in India recently.

The title seems redundant in the face of obvious dervishes. great work.

lol!
talk of redundant title!
Obviously you have not met thick scots.EVEN after telling the title, they remain blank-faced, stare at you and ask - what are dervishes?
thanks anyway for the comment and the fav!!

You have really made them whirl! I love the loose, almost blurry red of the tunic, stretched tight in the movement of spinning fabric. You've captured a moment. This is wonderful! I can almost hear the music!

actually I have a whole series - 2 really, in mind. This is one of them.
One series may be to be on Islam, starting from that 'faith' pic earlier, this one shows another facet of the same religion.
And the second series, which I am not sure if I'll take up at all;may be on dances - religious/semi-religious dances of the world.
I had seen some pics of women-in-trance while dancing - from spain/morocco region, some bhutanese monks too in almost trance...very fascinating phenomenon.

This is a very fascinating subject for me, as well. Trance is such a powerful, psychological phenomenon, whether induced by music and prayer, or by psychedelic drugs, as used by mystics in South America. I have seen documentaries on this, and it is truly incredible.

yes, chemically unaided is quite an enigma to me too.
With drugs I don't know. Never done them nor know anyone remotely. May be when I left India it was picking up there - I mean drug use - and when I was heere was too old to try it!!
So, about chemically induced trance I am doubtful. Meditation-achieved., we hear a lot of it in India. And I am humble enough to admit my ignorance about the esoteric.
What really appeals to me is the ordinary people's intoxication with sheer mass/crowd music-dance coinciding with religious calendar.

Religion is definitely a catalyst for trance. Ever seen an evangelical crowd in the midst of a "laying on of hands" healing ceremony? Wow! These people get touched by the 'healer' on the forehead with 'annointed oil', and they fall over backward. Actually healing? No real clinical evidence of such, and in my mind, it is complete quackery.
But people can really get worked up in the moment, surrounded by other people feeling the common vibes that are swayed by music and a suggestive, hypnotic voice. And some people really live for this. It is like a fix, or a drug for some; an escape from the pain of their lives. The problem is, this feeling is not accumulative. People have to go back and back in order to get that feeling again and again... like a drug.
What you are depicting here, however, is a prayer meditation that is trained and studied and perfected through dedicated repetition. I have seen the travelling whirling dervishes who put on a show in theatres, and it is quite something to see. Very invigorating and inspiring.

Come to think of it, I have not seen real dervishes! But we have a lot from our own religion to cmpare, including women on special festivities.Who would blow air in empty earthen/copper/brass pots while dancing without normal consciousness all the night through...It is both a bit paranormal and scary.
