how i draw backgrounds 90% of the time

1: start out with a darker color im drawing a fall forest so im using brown but you can really use any color. also if you want to sketch out basic tree shapes or ground cover you can i prefer to free hand it though. also having a color reference or just a scene reference can help you.

2: now get the a white or a super light color of what you used for your background i'm going with a few different colors, now this lightest point does not have to be in the dead center of your canvas it can go anywhere that is just the lightest point

3: now from step two you basically blend the lightest point to the darkest, i like using a textured brush but you can just blend it normally either way works

4: now with the blending done you should have something that looks somewhat like mine from here

5: if you want to make the edges darker create a new layer turn the opacity down to 70% or so select an air brush set it to black or a very dark version of your base color gently brush the edges of it you can also use a hard brush then just blend that in- but remember put it on a different layer!

6: create a new layer and make some background trees these trees will be a light-but just dark enough that you can see them it would be best if you did a variation of the color you used- these trees don't have to look perfect-they are just background trees to add depth these trees also don't have to have leaves on them as you will be adding lots of shrubbery later once those trees are finished you can blurr the layer to make them seem out of focus, but you don't have to

7: create a new layer and make more trees this time make them dark not pure black but just a darker color of what you have been using like dark blue, green, brown, orange, red or yellow save the black for later, also if you want create some ground cover like bushes and grass.

8: create a new layer and make more trees this time you can use black as these are the darkest trees you will draw also draw leaves on these trees they can also be black but they don't have to be. you also don't to add leaves.
