I;m just one of those guys who never calls himself English (or whatever) and aggressively forces Britain on people because I think it is silly to act like being a union for 304 years doesn't matter

You never call yourself English? I don't think a lot of Britain would agree with you on that one. The union itself was started out of invasion and financial need due to foul play on England's part mostly. Most of the countries in it had no choice about it. That's why they've never given up their country status or name. It's an important separation for them. The "British" part of it was mainly dictated by England anyway. But feel free to call yourself British. Most people outside of the UK use it interchangeably with "English" anyway. A rose by any other name.

Then again the English pay a larger tax amount per person and claim less benefit: the English pay the bill and if either Wales or Scotland became independant would not be able to fill the social welfare they get right now

And yet they still want to leave. Does that not give you some idea of just how truly ingrained this dislike is? Believe you me, history can have a lot greater impact on peoples mindsets than you think.

No current reason exactly. But go back in history and you'll find a wealth of reasons and that's why it continues today. Same goes for a lot of countries. Just look at Turkey and Greece.
