Description
"Calico" Yorki (his epithet comes from real life pirate Calico Jack, and it's awesome and I love it) was the first captain of the Rumbar Pirates, before succumbing to an illness and naming Brook as his successor. Fifty-two years before the neginning of the story, he led his crew (and Laboon) from West Blue, through Reverse Mountain, and after convincing Crocus to look after Laboon and vowing to come back for him, he led the Rumbar Pirates into the Grand Line. He got a bounty for fighting against a Marine base, but not long after that he contracted a disease that resembles the Tree Fever once suffered by the natives of Jaya (though it's unknown if it was the same or a related illness). He decided he would attempt to save the uninfected members of the crew by taking himself and the other diseased crewmates across the Calm Belt and into safer waters, after asking Brook to send him off with one last rendition of his favorite song, Binks' Sake. It is not known whether they made it to safety, but given the nature of the Calm Belt and the fact that most of them were dying, it's not likely they survived the journey. York was a carefree, light-hearted, and selfless man with an ever-present smile on his face, who loved music, his crew, and Laboon, and made incredible sacrifices to ensure the safety and happiness of those he cared about. His main goal in life was to make children smile. He really was too pure and good for this world.
