Description The McDonnell-Douglas F-4 Phantom II entered service in 1960. It was originally developed for the US Navy, but saw service with the Marines, USAF, and a number of air forces throughout the world.

Many versions were made over the years, and production and modification programs continued until 1981 with over 5,000 made in total.

The Phantom II proved itself in the interceptor, ground attack, SEAD, and reconnaisance roles, and it's high power and large weapon carrying capacity were a big step forward from previous aircraft.

The F-4 is armed with 1 x 20mm Vulcan cannon (F-4E) 4 x AIM-7 Sparrow and 4 x AIM-9 Sidewinder short-range missiles, or a mixture of bombs, AMRAAMs, air-to-surface missiles, and British F-4s carried Skyflash also.

It is a testament to the strength of the aircraft that many are still in service round the world today.

This example is an F-4B of VF-114 US Navy circa 1967.

Thanks!

I use Adobe Illustrator, but most people use Photoshop. It's pretty hard to explain but my personal choice is Illustrator because of the scaling of objects with no loss of quality - it's true that Photoshop allows more effects, but somehow drawings done that way look 'soft' to me...

Neither way is easy though, there's quite a lot of hard work and learning involved...

If I recall it originally was designed for missile fighting. MiGs still had Canons and so the US added one since someone forgot to tell us dogfighting was out of style...

Indeed.. missiles were - in theory - going to make guns unnecessary, but the theory was wrong....

Love those big wig thinkers no? Besides I ask you, which is more fun, vaporizing an enemy you can not see hundreds of kilometers away, or splatting them up close and personal???
