Description A quick sketch with an even quicker (read: shoddier) coloring job. But I like it.

Pierre Gringoire and Djali from the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Pierre was my favorite character, being that he was the only was that wasn't emo all the time everywhere. Or a dick like Phoebus. And Pierre/Djali is totally my Hunchback OTP. They were so cute together, particularly at the end.

And I loved it when Frollo was all "Pierre! Come help me save your wife!" And Pierre's all "Eh...or I could be doing other things..." Frollo: *blink, pause* "They're going to hang the goat, too." Pierre: "Then what are we waiting for!? Let's get going! Hurry! Hurry!"

So cute. ^_^ *pets them everywhere* And maybe he didn't like the goat *like that* but theirs was definitely the only true and unsullied love in that book.

Although I like the ones with drawings of the musical version of Pierre, this one is awesome because it follows the book!
Ahh, Djali looks so CUTE.

Best two characters in that entire book, by far. and I looooooove how you depicted Gringoire! I had a fan-gasm. No lie. squealing, 'aww'ing, hugging myself, kicking my feet excitedly...the whole enchilada.

Though I admit, Frollo's younger brother was fairly comical, too. A far worse idiot than Gringoire proved to be occasionally, but he amused me, so it automatically made him awesome. Even though Gringoire was depicted as somewhat older in the book, I STILL think Esmeralda was dumb for choosing Phoebus over him. :/ Especially since Phoebus essentially represents a younger, more charismatic (and in my mind, eviler) version of Frollo. Only after poor Esme's body, rather than her love.

Sooo glad Gringoire and Djali end up okay in the book. They're the core reason I felt satisfied with the ending. I love a good tragedy, but to have every character end up in turmoil kinda sucks.

Thank you for sharing! You did a great job on this!

Thank you very much. ^_^ And I agree with you on all accounts. Pierre and Djali ended up being my favorite characters by far, and I think their relationship was the most unsullied, so I was really happy with their ending. I literally cheered when they got away.

As for the others, I know Esmeralda was just being a 16 year old girl in this, but her decisions really just had me wanting to smack her for the most part. Frollo made loads of bad decisions, himself, but I actually found him to be the most sympathetic. Other than his obsession, he was a pretty decent guy. So I'm a little sad that neither of those two got the best ending, but Phoebus totally got what he deserved.

Whoa, I'm not the only one who totally loved these two! Seriously, I had the same exact thoughts while reading the book and even drew crappy fan art about it, too... That's simultaneously weird and cool. It's nice to know there are other people out there who have such good taste.

Aww, sweet picture. I've decided to join Gringoire in prefering the goat to Esmeralda: from the book I'd say that Djali is the more intelligent of the two, and I say that as someone who likes Esmeralda.

clayangel In reply to EyesLikeAbsinthe [2009-08-07 16:41:05 +0000 UTC]

Well, the problem with Esmeralda is that she's just a child of 16. I thought a lot of her actions were kind of dumb, but she's a teenager, and she's going to act like one.

EyesLikeAbsinthe In reply to clayangel [2009-08-07 18:48:22 +0000 UTC]

Yeah but... she announces her presence to the soilders sent to execute her. Because she wants to talk to her no-good boyfriend. If all teenagers acted like that the human race would have become extinct years ago.

I find the best way to think about it is to assume that her behavoir stems from being raised by a whole group of people who probably humour her, rather than a close family that would call her out when she was being stupid. Either that or she was dropped on the head.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

clayangel In reply to EyesLikeAbsinthe [2009-08-07 20:24:13 +0000 UTC]

Well, I'm not going to defend her too much. She was my least favorite character, I think, pissing me off more often than anyone else.

She was treated kind of like a princess with the thieves, though, wasn't she? I can't really remember as you only see her with them for a short time. But yeah, when everyone is always humoring you, you wouldn't have the best perception of reality.

EyesLikeAbsinthe In reply to clayangel [2009-08-08 11:29:56 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad someone else didn't have much sympathy with her. Everyone who'd read the book told me it was really sad and beautiful, so when I got to the end I was like... It was her own damn fault. I try not to bring that up in conversation, because people blessed with more empathy than I am tend to glare at me

clayangel In reply to polygamous-parrot [2009-08-07 16:44:06 +0000 UTC]

Yes! I found it so strange when I started reading the book because I didn't recognize him, but he's one of the main characters, and you're with him for quite a while before anyone you recognize comes in. But he's great. ^_^ Flawed, as is everyone in the book, but still great.

Oh, he's kind of a whiny, selfish coward, but I stand by my assertion that his relationship with Djali is the most pure one in the book. Pierre really grows on you, too. By the end, he was the only one I cared about having his happy ending.

Yes, he was, but yeah, so much less so than everyone else. When he showed up, he was usually like a light in the dark, consistently amusing me and keeping my spirits up while everything else went to hell.

And he's just too adorable about Djali. <3
