Description
This fierce gem was inspired by Todd McFarlane’s Lost Souls. What can I say? I have a soft spot for the macabre. I experienced somewhat of a revelation whilst drawing this up actually, one which could very well change my frame of mind whenever I hit the drawing board from this point onward.
Believe it or not, I intended to keep it loose and relaxed – just to get something down on the page. So I didn’t put a lot of pressure on myself to hit perfection right off the bat. That, I believe, allowed for a much more desirable, creative experience… I mean, I had an absolute ball with this! I was in my element, for the first time in a long time drawing something that I thought looked genuinely cool.
But you know what the crazy part is? It didn’t end up being the scratchy mess of scribble I’d predicted. In fact it was a win all round. Turns out taking the pressure off yourself in the beginning allows you to clear out the creative piping, work faster and naturally refine the work as you go.
The trick is tricking your brain in the first place. Somehow you have to tell yourself that what you’re about to draw ‘won’t’ be all that glorious – to unhinge those weighing expectations.
I’ve recorded the entire creative process and included it in the TIER 5 Patreon Rewards for Term 2. So you can see what I’m yapping on about here.
This is just another example amid the many of why it’s wonderful to be an artist. You never stop learning about yourself, because you’re always evolving. I believe that’s the very thing that keeps us hooked, whether you’ve been drawing for days or decades.
Stay safe. Let's crawl into the new year relatively sober and ready to rock n' roll.
