Description
Another image I did for the D&D 5th Edition Player's Handbook. The brief said "Iconic human wizard catches a foe with a Prismatic Spray spell" and gave the description of the 7th level spell. I had a lot of fun with this one as D&D is classic high fantasy and I got to choose the location, enemies and define the look of the spell. The wizard was fairly straight-forward; long robes, beard, staff but I wanted something very different for the enemies so I picked the amphibian Chuuls who love murky waters. Instead of the classic dungeon I thought an overgrown tropical temple would be fitting place that an adventuring wizard might encounter some Chuuls. Lighting-wise I chose to have two shafts of light; one behind the wizard to silhouette him and one to show off the foreground Chuul. It was important that the rest be shadowed so the colors of the spell would be very visible.Related content

I rather wish TPH allowed for artists' signatures on their work like the original edition did, as it helps establish a fanbase for the artists.

It is a tough thing to make a Prismatic Ray illustration that does not look cheesy or over-the-top. You succeeded perfectly here. Excellent work with the light !

I have to say that when my group got to this image in the PHB we stopped. This is the best depiction of Prismatic Spray and one of the best depictions of a spell in general I've ever seen.

This is really, really, really weird. Literally 2 minutes before I went online just now, I was thinking about TheSpoonyOne's Counter Monkey video where he was describing this very spell being used (and it's like a 2 hour long video, I was specifically thinking of this very part), and then I log on to deviantart and this is the first entry on the front page. That's like a seriously freakish coincidence. Scary.
