I think what's really sad is even though you mature as an artist, you'll meet new aspiring artists- be they younger friends or your friends' kids- who are learning that same hard lessons as well.

I was an artistic prodigy (seriously, I was! At least at drawing, but not paint), and I clearly recall the artistic plodders gathering around the my personal blackboard (this is in; like; 1960) and going - "I bet you're going to be an artist when you grow up!"
How wrong they all were.
But anyway, I can relate to what you're saying here!
