"Strawberry Blossom was among the last Breezies in her colony to hatch before her queen passed away. All of the breezies were devastated and frightened, and without a leader, the colony soon fractured into many smaller groups. Despite her youth and inexperience, the breezies in her group naturally accepted her as a leader due to her compassion and optimism in even the darkest hours. Strawberry is not very confident in her leadership abilities, though, and she often asks for advice from the older and more knowledgeable breezies when making major decisions."

Being eusocial, breezies in my AU can't function without a leader. Even the most headstrong and independent breezie needs someone to take direction from at least part of the time, otherwise they become quite anxious and unsure what to do. This psychological need can make orphaned breezies prone to gravitate toward the first creature that shows them kindness, essentially adopting them as a substitute queen. When this substitute queen happens to be another breezie, the pressure to lead combined with the need to be led often results in a few advisors pulling the strings and the leader being little more than a figurehead. Still, even this less-than-ideal relationship is preferable to being alone, as a lone breezie makes easy prey for foxes, wildcats, and any number of other small carnivores.
