okay, backgrounds
definitely asking the wrong person [XD when have you ever seen me do a reasonable digital background, ever? lol] but i'll try my best. you really have to keep in mind what your foreground is, so that the background doesn't get too busy so as to distract the viewer from the subject. often times it's a good idea to keep your background on a separate layer so you can adjust it accordingly.
when i need a simple background, i'll try a couple of things

oh when you make the selection you just right click [control + click for mac] and it should have the option of "feather..." and you just put in how many pixels.
no trouble
peruse all you can in the way of adobe help.
it's one of the better ways to learn,
second only to messing around and experimenting
