Description (download for less pixel fuzz)

Creature design is my all-time favorite thing in the art world, so I just couldn't resist CS's Silhouette Contest . I took it a bit further and challenged myself to use 100% of the silhouette, and, well, here we are.

I kept this reference sheet relatively small for the contest. A more detailed one will be made later on.

Not entirely happy with this layout here, but I suspect that is in part due to my bias of adoring traditionally drawn animal reference in a  field journal-like set up. It can't be helped I guess. :')

All right, I'm done jabbering about the art. Let's get to a brief rundown on the species itself.

Scientific Name: Snagontia              --(plural: Snagontia)
Common Name: Snaog                       --(plural: Snaogs)

Officially known as Snagontia, these amphibious creatures are found only in hot and humid climates. The humidity allows their soft scales to retain high amounts of moisture, which is vital to the function of their respiratory system. The heat keeps the rest of the body functioning, as Snogontia are ectotherms and cannot produce their own. They are often spotted sunbathing close to bodies of water.

Highly stubborn and a little dumb, these animals are fairly easy to catch. Unfortunately, they’re not nearly as easy to eat. Experienced hunters have learned that Snaogs, their slang term for Sagontia, are highly poisonous and should typically be avoided. A taste of one causes problems such as (but not limited to) blurred vision, fever, nausea, foaming mouth, numbness, and confusion/disorientation. Individuals who consume an entire Snaog run a very high risk of death. The only known remedy to Snaog-poisoning is through forced purging.

There are rumors that residual amounts of Snog-poison have been found on Arrows, but this information has yet to be confirmed.

An underground following also claims that Snaog-poison has pleasant hallucinogenic properties when taken in minute doses, but medics warn strongly against ever trying it.

There is only one method of Snaog consumption that is widely approved of and sought after; when the skin is carefully flayed and the poison-glands are removed correctly, Snaog legs are actually quite a delicious delicacy. They are remarkably difficult to come by, however, as it takes supreme skill to prepare the meat without tainting it.

Snagontia themselves survive on a diet of mostly insects, but they are able to eat whatever they can fit into their mouths. Considering the fact that their mandibles are able to stretch apart far beyond their relaxed size, that can be quite a lot. Especially ambitious Snaogs have even been known to eat small Suricates, although this occurrence is uncommon. All of their prey is swallowed whole, and the digestion process is slow. A large meal might take weeks to fully pass, leaving the Snagontia sluggish and grumpy in the meantime.

There is much more to be said, but I think I’ll save it for the more highly-detailed research journal. Feedback and questions are appreciated.
