Description "And then [he] should defeat all challengers and name the wolf maid the queen of love and beauty.” -A Storm of Swords, pg. 283.

Graphite, coloured pencil, ink. So much ink...

The WiP -

Clearly, I adore Rhaegar Targaryen. And while this wasn't for an improvement meme, here's my take on the same character from June of 2012. Did I improve? I'd like to think so. I might make this a yearly thing, as sort of an anniversary of A) my return to art in earnest and B) to gauge my improvement.

So I promised a critique on this amazing piece so here we go! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/w… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="387" title=" (Wink)"/>

First off, I REALLY love the background; like the actual texture feel I get from the paper. I just love how it looks very vintage/old, it really adds to the piece and makes the actual drawing pop with contrast which I love. It almost looks like you'd find it inside an old book, in a good way of course.

And oh my gosh, that armor is just freakin' amazing. I can tell you spent a lot of time on it for sure; the details in his chest piece are stunning, as are all the other clothing details. I can tell you've gotten a lot more confident with your coloring! I must say you have a really amazing gift with shading and making colors really pop without it taking away from the actual drawing.

The anatomy of both him and the horse is spot on as well; very inspiring for me since I can't draw guys worth a darn. But you've got that nailed! This really is just an awesome piece, everything about it is just so professionally done and inspiring e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>

Someone picked up on the book page feel I was aiming for! It's so... Rhaegar?

And thanks for noticing. Drawing armour is not something that I'm comfortable with and I literally agonized over every little thing during the inking process. Just ask my hubby about the right shoulder fiasco. And the dragon on his chest? Shoot me.

The anatomy... You're too kind.  To be honest I sort of cheated by covering it all up with shiny black plate and heavy brocade.

THANK YOU so much for taking the time to write this.

No problem, dear! It's the least I can do for all you've done for me ^^ And I love critiquing wonderful art pieces such as this ♥ You really did an amazing job on this. I picked up on the book page feel right away! If you don't mind me asking, how did you get that old, rustic look to the paper? I love it!!

Honestly? I just didn't erase my hand smudges. I liked how they looked, so I added more graphite to the left and right lower corners to give a more churned up effect, smudged it with my finger and then erased (cleaned up) from the upper right corner to his helm to give the illusion of a light source.

Oh wow, really? o . o It looks so natural I would have never guessed you did it with smudges! It literally looks like you did an aging technique like a coffee/tea rub or something. Kudos to you for doing it with only your goddess like hands!

Like with any of your artwork, I am completely blown away.

This one especially is absolutely amazing. The detail, vision, and technique are flawless! I seriously can't believe how much detail is in this. I really hope I can be that detailed one day too e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=" (Big Grin)"/>

Your color choices and shadowing are (once again) flawless. It really is stunning. I wish I could do more than just gush over how nice it looks, but seriously! It's so awesome! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=" (Big Grin)"/> I even like the simplicity of the background. It looks great against such a detail-oriented character.

Well done my friend, well done.

Thanks so much for taking the time to write this critique, Aungie. I know that they take more time and effort than the average comment or fav, so thank you. My only nitpick is that you might be too nice! I don't know what to work on next in order to improve.

Still, I would be lying if I didn't say that I'm happy (THRILLED) that you like this piece so. Thanks again for the glowing crit!

I know T.T I just can't help it, your stuff is so awesome!

I'm not very experienced with noticing technical/artistic errors except for anatomy wise so I don't always notice errors (if there is any) especially when it comes to something as epic as this

I'll try harder to find you better critique though!

CMBaggs In reply to AungiesArt [2013-09-11 15:25:25 +0000 UTC]

LOL, I'm sorry! I did not mean to critique your critique!

All you need to be a good critic is to be aware of what you like and what you don't, and understand why to some degree so that you can explain it to the artist. Art is subjective. So for me to expect everyone to LOVE what I did is silly. Same thing for the flip side. In every piece there must be something redeeming... something that the artist did well, whether it was colour choices, composition, the general idea of the piece... you get the idea.

It's not about redlining. If you loved this, and that's all there is to it, then that's cool. You told me WHY you love it. I should smile, feel a moment of pride, consider what you liked and keep working at getting better as a whole. Does an artist ever stop learning? Really? I hope not.

So your critique was fine. The blame is with me for not being content with your beautifully articulated praise.

Such a beautiful work! I'm getting further into the series and I'm eager to learn more about Rhaegar and Lyanna. I hope that eventually we get something that tells the full story.

Thanks! I gave the design quite a bit of thought. But, if I drew him again, I'd probably do more tweaking.

Thank you.

I love him too. The beauty about loving a character who is already dead is that GRRM can't take him away from me anymore...

Name me one other dead character from that series who gets mentioned even a quarter as much as Rhaegar Targaryen? That man was larger than life.

Oh my goodness, this turned out so amazing! I shall properly critique this soon; I've been a little busy around the house lately. But I will say for now that the coloring and shading is absolutely GORGEOUS! As for improvement; both pieces are wonderful, but I do have to say that you've improved tremendously

WOW!THIS IS SERIOUSLY SUPER COOL!

I think Rhaegar Targaryen will be rise from his grave to congratulate you, he must be very proud! (OK, I know I'm being hyperbolic here but I don't really care )

the detail is just

from the armor, to the horse, even the veil (is it veil, right?) in his hand is just well done. I definitely can see the different surfaces and textures in this. your drawing/ coloring/ shading skills is definitely improve, my friend!

I can see how much work and love you put in this piece, the result is AWESOMEEE!!!

Heh, thank you for your kind comments.

Yes... the (stark) white veil, lady's scarf, favor... thing...  Yeah. I know it should be tied to his shoulder or tucked into his gambeson, but I just liked how it looked on his lance. It flows so nice way up there.

I just had this idea in my head for awhile and I wanted so desperately to do it justice. I'm glad that you like it.

Wow, this is beautiful, I love the colours and the epic pose, also the fact that you added a horse in there too makes it even better!  I love the details in the armour and the way you coloured the fabric, it really does give it a lot of life

CMBaggs In reply to Sleyf [2013-09-08 14:22:51 +0000 UTC]

I'm trying really hard to convey different surfaces and textures with shading and colouring, and to show the different surfaces of his armour. Which I find difficult with black. I didn't want him to come out like a shink's inkblot! I'm such an amateur, but if I can see even a millimetre of progress I'm thrilled.
