Scratchboard

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is an introduction to scratchboard illustration for me. I believe that scratchboard is very appropriate to use for the horror genre because of its often unique and dark look, so I decided to create a poster for my favorite short story, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving.
In order to show how powerful and iconic the Headless Horseman is, I chose to depict him on his famed horse. With the title in the background, the horse is rearing up on its hind legs, oozing with power and the urgency to gallop away into the night. In addition, I added a thick, solid white line around the horse and his rider in order to further solidify the idea that they are ghostly, supernatural creatures not to be reckoned with.
