The years of accident-prone behavior paid off, and Michelle made it through her sales pitch with only a few moments where the pain in her toes distracted her. But the subtle winces and short gasps under her breath were hardly noticeable, and so far it seemed that they were not enough to distract from her presentation. If anything, a young pretty brunette in a couple of casts sporting some obviously new injuries seemed to have helped, her new heavier limp brought on a new found attention (and sympathy) from her prospective clients and seemed to earn their respect even more.

“Are you sure you want to join us for drinks?” One of the businessmen asked Michelle, “that foot looks really painful, maybe you should see a doctor or something?”

“I’ll be fine,” Michelle smiled back, “hey, for a gal that’s been trampled by bulls, hit by a car and had both legs broken at the same time on more than one occasion, a couple of dinged up toes isn’t enough to hold me back!” She loved the chance to throw in some of her previous medical history when talking with clients, I seemed to always help.

But that said, Michelle thought, catching herself wincing again, my poor toes do need a bit more focused TLC before I walk much further on them!!

Michelle waved out her guests, agreeing to meet them on the restaurant down on 5th in 30 minutes. The top floor was still vacant from the new renovations, the half hour would give her just enough time to pop op there away from the attention of the office and get herself fixed up properly. So long as she hurried…

20 minutes later, Michelle was gingerly taking the old bandages off her toes from the rushed medical aid she had applied before the meeting. They were definitely in rough shape, probably broken in at least a few places, and very swollen and discolored. There had only been one toe splint in her desk (from a previous injury), which left her with the decision to splint the most painful middle toe to the one beside it, and use padding and tape to splint the remaining two together. With the walking heel on her cast keeping them from touching the ground, that should keep them well enough in place to not cause her too much pain.

The metal splint went on smoothly, but the last two were much more difficult. With nothing rigid to splint to but each other and a bit of padding, the process of taping them was extremely tender and left Michelle gasping involuntarily in pain as the sharp shots from her damaged toes kept surprising her. But finally it was done, and all 3 broken toes were splinted securely to her satisfaction.

“5:35??” exclaimed Michelle, “I’m late!! This took much longer that I had expected!!” Embarrassed, she jumped up and rushed down the stairs. A little too quickly. “Oh SHI..” was the last thing out of her mouth as she tumbled down the staircase with a violent thud.

Ouch, that sounds that the broken toes will be a minor problem after this accident. Will she get a backbrace or a HALO?
