Little sidenote: if you have the Royal Edition, you can speak to Cor in the Glaive Underground after beating Ardyn's "pet". They have a very touching conversation, Cor remembering Noct being a child as well as telling him he looks just like his father. You can hear in Noct's voice that comparison makes him proud.
I just love this game, every little detail was thought out carefully and nothing was left to chance. I don't think the Versus one would have reached this one's standard, if what the Wikia on it is true. Besides, I feel this Noctis is far more approachable than the Versus one. But that's just me. *hugs older Noctis*

You don't need the royal edition for that, it is added as an upgrade for the regular version too.
Besides, there are different interpretations of the ending. While the most obvious is to see it like Noctis and Luna being united in the afterlife (effectively dead), there is also the fact that the damage in the throne room that Ardyn has done (the hole on the left side) remains. Which can be interpreted as a clue that the throne room is actually real and they have been resurrected.
