The Desert Eagle pistol has a very unusual design. It uses the largest cartridges of any pistol. It was designed to compete with magnum revolvers. Development of this weapon commenced in 1979 by a US-based Magnum Research company. The basic design was established and patented in 1983. This design was refined for production by the Israel Military Industries (IMI) and application for the second patent was filled in 1985. Production commenced in 1985 by Israel Military Industries. Between 1995 and 1998 production was carried over to the United States, however was later returned to Israel. Since 1998 this pistol was manufactured by Israel Weapon Industries. Since 2009 the Desert Eagle is produced in the United States by Magnum Research, an American privately held corporation.

Although popular in the action movies the Desert Eagle was actually developed for target shooting and hunting. It is not a true combat pistol. For the combat role this pistol is way too bulky. It is uncomfortable to carry hold and fire. Most shooters it is uncomfortable to handle and fire. Furthermore this weapon has violent recoil and small magazine capacity. Still though some sources report that this pistol is used Polish and Portuguese special forces.

This pistol has an unusual design. It is a gas operated weapon rather than a short-recoil or blowback operated weapon. Such design is typically associated with assault rifles, but not with pistols. Operating mechanism has some similarities with the M16 assault rifle or Ruger Mini-14 carbine. Such operating mechanism allows to use much more powerful cartridges than traditional pistol designs allow. The Desert Eagle fires with locked breech. This pistol is available with steel or aluminum frame. Version with aluminum frame is significantly lighter. The Desert Eagle pistol comes in a variety of different finishes.

The Desert Eagle is chambered in .50 Action Express, .44 Magnum and .357 Magnum ammunition. The .357 Magnum is actually a revolver round. All of these rounds are extremely powerful. There was also a version chambered in .440 Cor-bon caliber. But it was not popular.

This pistol has an unusual feature and can easily switch between chambering. It requires only the correct barrel, bolt assembly and magazine to be installed. Such conversion can be easily made by the user.

This pistol is also available with different barrel lengths. Barrels can be easily swapped by the user. The .375 Magnum version is available with 6 inch (152 mm), 10 inch (254 mm) and 14 inch (356 mm) barrels. The .44 Magnum version is available with 6 inch (152 mm), and 10 inch (254 mm) barrels. It seems that the .50AE version is available only with a 6 inch (152 mm) barrel.

The Desert Eagle pistols chambered in .50 Action Express and .440 Cor-bon are fed from 7-round magazines. Version chambered in .44 Magnum, has 8-round magazine. Version chambered in .375 Magnum revolver ammunition is fed from 9-round magazines.

This pistol has an ambidextrous manual safety switch on each side of the slide. The safety switch blocks the firing pin.

The Desert Eagle typically comes with fixed iron sights. However adjustable sights were also available on some models. Furthermore this pistol has a dove-tail style rail on top of the barred for mounting various optics. Newer versions additionally have a Picatinny-type scope rail. This pistol can easily hit targets at a range of at least 50 m.

There is a Jericho 941 pistol, which is sometimes branded as Baby Desert Eagle, Baby Eagle, and even Desert Eagle. This pistol was also developed by Israel Military Industries, however it is a completely different design and has nothing in common with the Desert Eagle. It was just an attempt to capitalize on the commercial success of the original Desert Eagle pistol.

Variants

Desert Eagle Mark I. It was an original production version. These pistols were available in .375 Magnum and .44 Magnum. This version is no longer produced;

Desert Eagle Mark VII. Thos version is also available in .375 Magnum and .44 Magnum. Later the .50 Action Express chambering was introduced. The Mark VII version has an adjustable trigger;

Desert Eagle Mark XIX is the recent version. It has a Picatinny-type scope rail. These pistols come in a variety of different finishes. Magnum Research company offers a muzzle brake for these pistols, that reduces the recoil.
