Why do I have this feeling that Claudus was actually kinda resentful towards Lion-O... if you think about it, the queen died while giving birth to him; Claudus lost his wife and got a good-for-nothing (or so it seemed) son.

I don't think Claudus disliked his son. Sure he wasn't a perfect prince, but I'm sure Claudus has a heart. His boy had to grow up without a mother and his brother (Tygra) probably blamed him for loosing his mother too. Children often say things what's on their heart. Also Claudus KNOWS it wasn't Lion-O's fault that Leona passed away. Moreover, Leona wanted children very much.
Claudus probably had a better life, with both parents and all, also as Jaga said, 'His father wasn't always satisfied with him either', so Claudus was not a perfect prince either. Parents don't usually loose faith in their own offsprings. Lion-O was his and Leona's son. Their blood.
The expectations were just probably very high for Lion-O.
